I fully agree that it is not the headlights that are most appropriate for a Bugatti Type 57 Atalante, definitely.

For those who condemn or question the judging at Pebble Beach, remember there is more to it than most think...

First a car must win its class -- sometimes this is more difficult than anything else to be honest! I've seen multiple times where the 2 or 3 best cars are within the same class of judging. Only one can win and move onto final judging. Class judging is determined by a points system -- and each class the judging and rules can vary. Thus judging for the Ferrari class is very different than the pre-war coupe class and different from the Duesenberg class.

Judging for other awards ala elegance, best coupe, etc -- all subjective.

Best of Show award? At the end of the day when all the class winners are within the "winners group", it is the honorary judges (not the individual class judges) who determine the award. Thus originality / uniqueness / history / points -- it might not be and usually isn't relevant. Purely a subjective vote by the honorary judges. It isn't an easy decision and there usually is some very heated arguement within the judges before the vote is taken on some years.

Definitely get out the rulebook for Pebble Beach and learn how the rules / judging is accomplished. Then for say the Ferrari class -- learn the FCA judging rules. Ditto for Duesenberg Club, Rolls Club and other classes and how their rules are determined. There is no "standard" across all classes for judging at Pebble Beach -- and it would be impossible to create one that was fair and had enough knowledgable judges to make happen.

I've been involved with winning many class 1st place awards over the years. I was involved with an Atalante that missed BoS by 2 honorary judge votes many years ago. I was involved with the 2.9 Alfa coupe last year which won the honorary judges votes by a landslide.

The Horch that won this year -- it did so because it was a first class restoration, the coachwork is truly unique (not everyone may love it), it is a unique marque at the time and (although I haven't seen the final honorary judges vote) -- it was unquestionably most deserving.

Too bad somebody doesn't purchase the Royale from the Ford Museum and restore it for Pebble Beach. Now we are talking about something that if restored correctly could "win" its class -- probably it's toughest battle and could then easily get BoS vote via the honorary judges. Anyone have a wheelbarrow full of million dollar bills to make it happen?

Re : Superleggera's post.

Hear, hear. And for the record, yes I was aware of the fact that only class winners are eligible for Best of Show, what is news to me is that the final judging are done by the honorary judges. But thinking about it, it actually makes a lot of sence ; after all the class judges will already have weeded out all the bad/incorrect restorations leaving the Best of Show judging as a pure appreciation of aesthetics. Which is the way it should be, of course.

Mark, about your wish for the Weinberger Royale - keep wishing, you never know ............. perhaps one day. Perhaps even sooner than that.

Regards
Johan

Hi everybody, I have just returned from my annual visit to the vintage car week events in and around Pebble Beach. This year, like every previous year was remarkable. I go nuts when I am surrounded by so many wonderful cars and so many other people who know and love them.

My favorite event of the week was the vintage car races at Laguna Seca. Watching eighty year old Type-35's at speed is really something to see! This year, there must have been a hundred Porsche's or more. There were five Bugatti's on the track at one time and, unlike last year, they all seemed to run right. Last year, none of the cars that raced ran right at all and it was obvious from the stands.

The Concours at Pebble Beach is always awe inspiring to me. This year, there were lots of Bugatti's. There were also quite a few of the cars that represented the old Auto Union. Some of them were outstanding.

For me, the party atmosphere helps make the week the time I look forward to more than any other time of the year. I won't waste the boards time rehashing information already presented such as the Royale or the Bentley's, the Horch (best of show) or any of the others.

How about a bit of investigation Mr. Kelsey. Why did Conway give a different history of car 57834 to the history in Wiki. I lent my copy of the NA Register to someone who then disappeared with it!

My Dear Sir, hunt this miscreant down like a dog and hang 'im high! Those who borrow books and don't return them are evil-doers. Bounders even!
