I would like to know between which years were the first 100 Baby Bugattis built, and if all of them were short nose.
Thank You.

Good morning,

Indeed the first about 200 cars seem to have been short wheelbase cars - it remains a mystery why so few (compeâred to the chassis numbers 200 to 450 which were LWB cars) survive.
The first 100 cars were all made in 1927.
I own cars number 57, 102 and 422A.

Regards, Wolfgang Fischer, Zurich

Here's my collection of Baby Bugattis:
Red car: has been in Switzerland since 1927, short chassis. Chassis number 102.
Blue car: belonged to Jules Goux, or rather: his daughter. Chassis number 57.
Yellow car: was Prince Baudouin's car, it was delivered new to his father King Leopold of Belgium in 1930. Chassis number 422A.

Very nice!

What is the difference in wheelbase of the short and long version?

I am afraid I have to do with a replica (authentic models) and a collection of parts, which almost make a type baby. (bar wheels, steeringbox internals and half the rear shaft).

I'm afraid there are a number of differences, but the main one is that the bonnet (hood) is longer on the LWB cars, and the cockpit cut-out has a different shape. The earliest cars also had slightly smaller wheels with a separate steel ring - I have got the original set for Jules Goux' car (not fitted on the photos because I can't get tyres for the smaller rims). You can spot the black steel rims for example on the photos of Roland Bugatti in the first Baby Bugatti. Incidentally, I wonder where that car may be today..

There's one thing I find funny on this kind of pics: they align them very well and give the photo the right light and background... but the cars are always terribly dusty and full of handprints! Why???

By 'they' you mean me: Yes indeed, I love my Baby Bugattis dusty and well used. If you go for polished cars, get yourself a Pur Sang Baby! I personally don't think dust and chipped paint look bad - but if you don't share my taste, that's OK with me..

I consider that to be the proper attitude. Thank you!

That is why my son and my cat are providing the right patina to a "Authentic Models" type Baby...
