A large number of these cars have been dismantled to facilitate the construction of fake type 43s and fake type 35s.

Here are some notes of known cars.

Observations welcome :

38101
The first type 38 delivered, to Leo d’ Erlanger, in March, 1926. It was one of nine sent to the UK in 1926. A further eight were imported in 1927 and 1928, including three supercharged type 38C (or 38A as they became known). The internet site bugattibuilder.com shows 38101 at the Het Loo event in 2006. It is listed as a type 38/44 and shown fitted with a dark blue GP-style body. The car has appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and carries the Netherlands reg. no. PX 41·82. (Van Egmond ?).

A car was listed in 1962 and 1973 in the ownership of R. Elizalde of Segurola 890, 10C, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 2007 publication “Bugatti Argentina” lists Atkinson as a previous owner but gives no further information apart from a reference to its “2 door Cabriolet Gangloff”. This information was reported by Horacio Speratti.

38163
Fitted with a Figoni body. In 1954 the car was purchased by Bud Lutza, an American working for the US Government in Casa Blanca. He shipped the car to his home in San Jose, California and distmantled it with the intention of carrying out a restoration. In the belief that they were unoriginal, he disposed of its seats and purchased new blocks, water ump, manifold, etc. directly from Molshiem. In 1967 the still dismantled car was acquired by Ernie Mendicki (whose address was listed in Autumn 1999 as 10290, Imperial Avenue, Mona Vista, California 95014). He sold it around 1969/70 to finance a Ferrari project. Its new owner was Bill Hinds who ran a resoration business in Monterey, California. Hinds hit financial difficulties and the car was broken-up. Bob Seiffert used the chassis and engine to construct a Grand Sport-bodied car and was issued with a replacement chassis plate for the car by the UK BOC on 31st January, 2003. The original body reappeared on a Delahaye frame owned by Jim Proffit in Long Beach California.

The British Registration Index lists “37174?” against the UK registration YR 4662. The engine re-appeared in a kit of bits assembled by the late Henry Posner which formed the basis for a type 38 special with the engine supercharged and the car fitted with a Grand Sport-style body. It was issued with the BOC identification BC 130.
38175
A 1929 type 38 fitted with a Compton four-seater touring body and issued with the UK reg. no. MS 7594. The car passed through the hands of A. Laing around 1939, A.C. “Twink” Wincop and M.E. Guadin. To add to Legaleagle's list, the following from Du Gan's history of 43173/14

Image

"Delivered May 1927 to Paris Showroom." (Confirmed by Conway)

"History :

This car is now in the National Museum at Mulhouse, France with the catalogue Nr of 0620. Its history is unknown. However a T38(38443) entered Switzerland on 15 March 1930, Q8745, with the engine from this car. That engine is now in 43164. Bodywork is a Cabriolet, wire wheels and is painted yellow with black fenders and trim with unusually small headlights. Possibly Ermini (sic?) & Rossi. No other information regarding the presently installed engine."

Image

Now compare 43173 with this photo from Wiki's entry for T38(38443) Looks like the same coachwork to me, although I can't tell if that valance is the only difference at the front, near the bottom of the radiator. I can offer no solution, I am way to tired to think of a witticism and I am not allowed to be insulting. Anymore. Anyone else want to have a go?

Regards
Johan

Quite some similarities, but also differences. However, the differences are so small they can be caused by a restauration or amendment in the past.

At least the large wheel spinners are gone...

The car shown as chassis 38397 on page no. 13 of Barrie Price's "The 8-Cylinder Touring Car" is actually chassis no. 38347, the ex-Russell Townsley car now with Dr. Michael Jukes of Florida. The car has it's bonnet and is complete in every respect. Restoration is planned...at some point.
