How many GP cars were built in total?
How many of each (T-35 B, T-35, etc)?
How many of the orginal T-35B's still exist? I believe 45 were originally made.

Conway's factory register data on the T35:

T35 : 96
T35C : 46
T35T : 13
T35B : 37

Plus 138 T35A gives a total of 330. To get the total number of GP cars built go to the Register and add the production totals for the following Types to the 330 T35s :

T32, T36, T37, T39, T51, T54 & T59. And perhaps the T13 - it's a racer but is it a GP racer?

Kindly note : Greg Morgan's total of 2000 surviving GP cars is approximate and 1 or 2 of them might not be totally geniune.

Kind Regards
Johan Buchner

I think a slightly better answer may be that of the 691 GP cars made at least 2000 survive today :D

Just a bit more serious: I thought that 2001 was the total number of surviving Bugattis. (It was 2000, plus the recently re-surfaced Royale)

quite right you are. just the same as for the mercedes ssk. out of ca. 33 cars originally built, there are some 13o now round the world.

I think there are slightly more than two or three genuine cars around, what for shure will lead to the discussion: when is a car genuine??

regards from austria
mike

ps. in two weeks there will be the international bugatti ralley here in austria in wonderfull settings of salzburg and tyrol ( trip on the famous "großklockner hochalpenstrasse)

The "of x built some y survive" device was also used by Peter Hull/Nigel Arnold-Forster in their Vintage Car Casebook in 1976. Whether they minted it I don't know, but it has been used in regard to many marques for many years.

remember, when the conway/crailsheimer book was issued in the early 8o`s, the survival rate was around 15oo incl. many fakes or bitsas. so during some 3o years
5oo more bugatti`s turned up???

Hi Mike.

When I started getting interested in Bugattis it was a commonly held belief that of the 8000 Bugattis produced roughly 1500 survive. (I got this figure from Classic and Sports Car, only later did I realise they got it from Conway.) The time-honoured tradition of turning T35A/T37 into T35Bs obviously has no effect on the number of surviving cars, so where do the extra 500 come from? I can believe some were genuine discoveries, I can also believe the figure of 1500 to be conservative, but what gives me the kind of headache you get when ice-cream is eaten too quickly is the thought of 500 newly minted Bugattis slipping onto the scene unnoticed.

There is nothing wrong with replicas, nothing wrong with building a Bugatti from scratch either, but to claim a Molsheim identity for them is demeaning to the cars and an insult to our intelligence. Also illegal I believe.

Kind Regards
Johan Buchner

I have recent pics of 1400 identified Bugatti... And more that 200 not identified car's recent pics... I am a little amateur and I am far to be exhaustif... I am surprised by the little number of survived cars given by "Big" authors.... Why ? Value most important ? Fakes (I have retired the replicas given by Wiki) ? Sorry for my English !

Guys can I just say that when I made the earlier remark of 2000 cars, it was just a rather clumsy attempt at irony.
suddenly people in this thread seem to have taken that figure and run with it!

Is it just a little bit possible that some people take the whole thing just a little bit too seriously? They're just old cars, you know.
