Course Imitation: T35A. A downtuned, more simple version of the T35, with 8 cilinders, but simple bearings, no through-dashboard magneto, and other subtle differences.

I am sure Bugwrench knows more.

Also see: http://www.bugattibuilder.com/wiki/index.php?title=Bugattis_by_type

The link above has most of the type numbers. Although I am keen on learning about the T39A, B, C, D

I am a little confused by Kees Jansen's comments as well - surely the presence of needle bearings precludes it from being a Course Imitation (T35A)? The T35A was fitted with the engine from the T30 if I am not mistaken. And Conway is quite specific, 4752 is a T35, not a T35A, nor does engine 69 have an "A" suffix.

On the other hand, Kees Jansen is not known for getting things wrong very often, I am looking forward to his response. But not as much as I am looking forward to the arrival of his T46 book, it has to be said.

And it's quite a book to look out to too; I haven't seen a book with so many unknown cars in it for ages!

Is Kees Jansen on this site? I know he is normally very accurate, is there anyway to get a hold of him?

Hi Erik

Yes, Kees is a regular contributor. The easiest way to get in touch with him is to go to the top of the page, click on Memberlist, he is no.15 - keesj. Click on private message (pm), write and send. Like most of the great European historians he is approachable, friendly and, best of all, he responds to all polite communications!

Kind Regards
Johan

He sometimes visits this site, yes. (keesj is his nickname, do a search for that on the forum, and send him an email or private message)

Well Herman, we are both admirers of Kees - who can blame us?

Posted exactly the same time? What are the chances, hey?

What is meant by Course Imitation? Also, what was this cars history in South America? Why was it there?

Sorry Guys, I have been too quick last time! This car was not a Course Imitation! In the Factory documents it was listed under the chapter 'Course Imitation 2 l' but at further scrutiny it turns out the first five cars are normal GP's (4748- 4752) and the next 7 of that month were types A. (4753- 4759). These were less powerful, much cheaper cars with wire wheels instead of the distinctive alloy wheels, that quickly received the nickname 'Tecla', after the imitation pearls that one could buy in those days.

Ed de Matarazzo was a very large and important Bugatti agent in Sao Paolo in Brasil in 1926. Ettore cherished the sale outside France as for instance Sorel in London got the cars much cheaper, and so did Matarazzo.
For instance he ordered 15 types 38 in June 1926 for which he paid Frs 35.000 each (rolling chassis), whilst the Magasin in Paris had to pay Frs 39.200 for the same car at the same time. He also bought a large number of Bugatti 'Babies' (now usually called type 52 but that was not the factory designation)

Sorry for this mixup.

PS For those of you that have ordered the 46 book: it is out now. It is being sent to all who ordered it as I write. I can tell you it will become a very good investment! I am convinced you will not be disappointed!

Thanks Mr. Jansen.
How was this car able to stay so original, and any idea just what it was doing in South America? I have only been on here for about a week, but this site has now become one of my favorite forums!

I was at Fred's museum last week -- fantastic place and definitely a great enthusiast with some truly stunning automobiles. He is without a doubt a passionate enthusiast and his love of what he has there is infectious.

I took some pictures of the Bugatti's while there -- will post once I get caught up with work the next few days. I didn't have time to detail like I did the BMW 328 or Alfa's within the museum. Just ran out of time -- I could have spent another two days there. But I do have some great pictures worthy of posting shortly.

Just external pictures of #4752 -- didn't have time to open it up and take engine or chassis pictures. Next time!

(I'll post pics of the T57G this weekend)
