I don't doubt the authenticity of this T57G -- Fred has done his homework thoroughly and has all the evidence required with all records needed.

Per the 2.9 Mille Mille racecar? My personal opinion (and from other evidence I've seen) is that the darker color red is more correct. All I am going to say is that I'm glad the ex-Serri Alfa wasn't painted "black".

No not black but destroyed nevertheless.

I have a slightly different take on it Bugwrench, this car is perfect - now. It is the soul of this great and historic racer which has been annihilated.(But I think this is what you meant anyway) Like a beautiful woman with a cheap face-lift, the magic is gone.

A sincere thanks to both you and Mark for speaking out about this appalling act of vandalism. It might not change anything, but at least this crime has been documented.

Respect.
Johan

(thread drift)
It wasn't destroyed or vandalized -- just it's "soul" which it had rightfully earned was decimated beyond recognition. My personal opinion -- I think all old Alfa (ERA/Bugatti/etc) factory racecars should appear such as if their tired corpse had just run the Mille Miglia or Le Mans the day before. Admittedly it's the decision of the current caretaker of the chassis to decide it's fate. (and also based upon the condition of the chassis over the decades of usage and wear/tear and modifications made thereof.) The Lauren 2.9MM is a stunning car without question in the form it current is. It probably is one of the most time consuming restorations done outside of the Silver Arrows projects. Unfortunately it now looks like it belongs as a centerpiece within an art museum somewhere -- not on a racetrack where its provenance was originally created and proven. Hopefully one day it is used on the road for events ala the Mille Miglia and possibly for vintage racing again. If they need a volunteer to drive it -- I'd be one of the first in line to do so...
(end thread drift)

Back to this thread! That is what I like about the collection amassed by Dr. Fred -- 85% of the cars are in original condition. You can feel the history and "soul" of the chassis within the dents, scratches, oil drippings, threadbare material and usage -- and thus you remember the drivers who drove these vehicles to begin with and what made them so famous. For myself it isn't just the "car itself" that is important -- it's the history about it, who drove it, the circumstances of why it was built and raced. Sometimes people forget these other factors when they are comparing color swatches and whether an item was chromed or not.

I say go ahead and post the photos of the rest of the cars in this collection. For instance, there is a yellow tourer, next to the yellow Ford GT I do not recognise.

The car next to the GT40 is a DuPont LeMans car. The only one of its kind left in existence. It was raced at Le mans, then restored by the DuPont family in the 1960's by the same guys that built the car 30 years before at the factory, that was closed, but some of the guys were brought back to work just to restore the car! It then stayed with the family for many more years until the Dr. bought the car. He also has another non Le mans DuPont in his collection. See www.simeonefoundation.org for other cars in the collection.

PS. Please POST MORE PICS!! I love the museum.

One small info on the Lauren cars; I believe it was before (or after) the Pebble Beach show where both Atlantic's were present, that some kind of tour was held. Williamson's Atlantic ran all the distance with no problem at all, while Lauren's car gave up after few miles with Gearbox problems. I guess museum piece is in order.

Pity

And insiders know that the cars were not prepared by the same restorer!

Anyone have any pictures when this car ran at Goodwood in 2003 or 2004?

i can remember an other article on the car + road test in the late 8o`s. I think the magazine was either "throughbreats & sport cars" or "classic & sport cars".
I think, it was then in the posession of uwe hucke.

regards
