Christ guys, this photo is 5 years old, it's like opening a 1960 bottle of Champagne and thinking it will have fizz. It's time to notice it's summer - 2011 !!!! Geez ! BTW it was Bern Hansel of Hanover in a race near Nürburgring - in 30 days his car was on the Mille in Argentina - fixed.

It's clear, you know it all the great OZ ..........

I crashed on a Spanish wheel that has run on my car since the 1960's. I am positive it was done by Pueche in Madrid. It literally expoded ( as alloy does!) when I touched a curb ....well at 70 KPH. Pieces are still being found in the woods. My original wheels are still excellent - no issues, but who will race an original car and think that the old wheels are better than new ones - regardless of the source....

OZ , not bad . Should I change from Udolahr to OZ ?
But we are back to the old problem . We have 2011 , it is easy today to make a new high quality wheel from modern aluminium alloy , but ist cost a little more money . And all go for the cheapest scrap .

OK guys, back on track or I will clean up the thread to something readable.

-What is the quality of modern wheels (per manufacturer) compared to old wheels?

Wrong !
I know the driver who drove right behind that Argentinian look-alike when the accident happened and it was a driver error, not a broken wheel.

The driver wanted to overtake another car, got on the grassy shoft shoulder which made the car swerve and go diagonal to the road.
In that position the car hit a concrete canal in the ditch, which literally "exploded" the two passengers (not one) out of their seats, which saved their lives, as the car then overturned several times.
The broken off wheels are a result of those impacts, not the reason for the accident.

Besides, there are countless period photos of crashed Bugatti GPs that show the same broken off wheels and even broken off front spring hangers after an accident.

Herman,
besides the Argentinian source, there are of course the two British manufacturers who offer wheels in very good quality.

There is a Brit living in Spain who also sells GP wheels. I can´t comment on that as I don´t know anyone who uses them, but this guy usually comes to the Retromobile.

Last but not least, there is also a German manufacturer who - IMHO - makes the best of them all (no offense intented, lads) to competitive prices:
high-grade aluminium alloy, heat treated, crack checked and stainless steel thread inserts (for the rim bolts), perfect.
