I spent the weekend at euroexpo in Lyon.During the show I had the chance to chat at length with M.Rondini who is currently recommissioning some of the Bugattis prototypes from the Schlumpf museum. He has the T73 [a] Saloon and the T252 sportscar. He confirmed to me that the T73[a] Saloon is a Type 73 and is not a T73a at all. This confirmed my own opinion as I have all the drawings for all the T73 cars here and there are NO drawings for T73a except for the motor. Therefore the designation T73a refers to the engine type and not to the car.Somewhat academic really as we do not even know if the T73a motor was ever tried in the car and also because the car was used as a testbed for the T252 motor which it still has to this day.So both of the cars currently with M.Rondoni have the same type of engine the Type 252 MK2b [Eduard Bertrand redesign of the Columbo original ] The Saloon is running again, but the motor from the T252 is dismantled with the problems outlined to me by Pierre Macoin,to wit oil in water and water in oil.I am hoping to visit this week to get some photos of this motor in pieces [never seen before i believe] You will of course see them here first. :D

Great, and also great news to see the museum taking care of the usability of the cars.

I hope they will let the cars out of the museum for a couple of occasions.

Have a look at the latest additions to the photo album ; contributor Lazarus has a choice collection of Bugattis, and he is prepared to share his good fortune with the rest of us. I wish there were more like him.

Johan

PS. Herman I agree with you - the news about the Schlumpf is great. Perhaps the T50B will return to Prescott in 2009? That would be a sight to see.

M.Rondoni was given both T251 cars last year to see if one car could be made to run for special demonstrations.Sadly columbos use of the round chassis tubes as the water pipes from front radiator to rear engine [ the period Lotus cars have the same problem ] has resulted in a chassis which in Rondoni's words "is like a piece of limp spagetti" The holes are such that it would require a new frame to be made before it would be safe to run. This would raise a question over the cars "originality" afterwards and apparently it has been decided that the car must never be driven and yet it remains one of the most fascinating and beautiful cars at schlumpfs.Sadly somewhat dead. As usual I totally disagree with this decision. The original chassis can be hung up in the museum and could if reqd be put back on if someone were mad enough to want to do it.It is not as if they were short of space.Racing cars wear out and some parts have to be changed. This is a sore point with me as I have discussed this with the director of the museum when I tried to arrange to restore something for them in exchange for the use of ONE of the spare T251 motors as a pattern for the manufacture of an engine for MY T251.I offered to lend them a beautiful restored car for display for a year whilst i stripped and drew the T251 motor.Unfortunately they have too many Bugattis and might have been more interested if I had a Hispano or something else to lend. They really need a CAR enthousiast in charge there ! And a more relaxed ruling allowing sales or swops of cars ,No museum needs 5 identical T57sc cars sitting next to each other. With all the attempts to improve that museum they have suceeded in perpetuating some of the sillier Schlumpf ideas, whilst destroying the dramatic appeal of the ONE massive room with properly arranged Bugattis. They were kind enough to allow me behind the scenes there and I have seen things which would make you weep.
