44319

A car fitted with engine 114. The car was converted in the UK into a racing special by Arthur Baron with a shortened chassis, Leyland Thomas gearbox, Hardy Spicer propshaft, and an engine with 14 to 1 compression ratio. It was reputedly capable of 123 mph. It was imported into Australia for Max Lawton and was entered in the 1936 South Australia Centenary Grand Prix. It did not start due to a broken crank.(It is assumed that published pictures of the car carrying no. 18 were taken on this occasion). During WW2 it was sold in pieces to Brown and then passed to Ted Wells. On 12th October, 1953 it is said to have been driven by him at a meeting at Port Wakefield but has not appeared since. It was subsequently owned by Harvis (according to the “The Bugatti Book”) or Jarvis (“bugattibuilder”). In 1962, the car was listed in the ownership of H.M. Newland of 186, Main North East Road, North Walkerville, South Australia and was “Being restored”. In 1992 it was referred to in Bob King’s “Bugattis in Australia” and in 2008 is listed on “bugattibuilder” in the ownership of Mrs. Newland.
