Post subject:  The early Bugatti Patents
I am investigating all the Bugatti Patents, which will hopefully culminate in a book. There are currently over 750 patents, from many different countries (Germany, France, GB, USA, Denmark, Belgium, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, Spain). Most patents are of course by Ettore, quite a few by Jean, but there are also patents by Carlo and Roland.

Now, my question is the following: I have difficulty finding especially the early German (also the very early French) patents. The early German ones I have are:

However, I know that there were quite a few more, especially German ones before WW1 (so up to 1914).

Does anybody have more info about these? What I basically need are the numbers only, but of course more info would be very welcome!

I know that in those days a lot of crossovers of technologie took place. Read the magazine Het Automobiel Jan.2009. Story of Stutz Black Hawk Mr Moskovics and Bugatti.

There are 2 sets of patents available on Ebay.

One is a CD which you probably have, otherwise contact me, the other is a set of "original" transcripts, they are yours for a "bargain". :wink: Sell your scale models, and you are almost there...

Isn't there a search facility for patents? I recall something like "espacenet". Or don't they go back far enough?

There is a lot in Espacenet, and they even go back far enough (the patents on the CD have been retrieved from there also). Problem is that the earliest patents are not searchable. The scan is there, but it is not catalogued, only the patent number is there, and the scan.... Not searchable though. Try it with the early German numbers in my former mail, no mention of Bugatti, or the title is made, the scan is perfect though.

So, if anybody has numbers, that's sufficient.

I'll get the Automobiel issue.

OK, it is just about the numbers then. I recall seeing a list in a book, no idea of which book however. And I cannot reach my books at the moment. (bathroom ingredients in front of the book shelves, I hope the construction guy works quick).

Anyone else that recalls the list, and can retrieve it? Johan?

I have not really found a list (yet), maybe one of the lesser known books, Tragatsch or so.
Of course the Magnum has an article on the Patents, which is a reprint of the lecture he held for the Newcomen society. Some of the other books occasionally mention them, with usually a few numbers only.

What I am asking for are especially the German (DE) and French (Fr) patents, especially form before 1914!

Over 750 patents!? Anybody knows how many patents there were, counting all of them together??

And of course, many patents in different countries were identical, how many basic patents were there? 250, 350??

And, what patent did Carlo hold? I saw some of the Roland patent (4 cylinder engine with rotating head), but what did Carlo invent?? Some special piece of furniture??
