hello everybody now is talking about the sensational barnfind of the Dr.Carr T57sc but what else: for my opinion one of the greatest bugatis ever left in dust is not the ex carr`s T57SC, which was ever known by many peoples where it had it`s rest, but Dr Carr ever refused a sale. but the most interesting bugatti, which was only photographed in the late 6o`s , is the T5o, Nr. 5o146 with the really stuning Ghia Body. in all my bugatti literature no link for the owner ever appears and I think, thereàre hardly a handfull prescott-peaople who really know where this stuning car is today !!! same, when I took the Price book on the T46/T5o to read about the late Uwe Hucke, who completed the only one T5oS type ???? any dusters for the webs coming up ??? regards mike |

You had me wondering there a minute, as of course 50146's body is by Saoutchik. Indeed, one of the most beautiful bodies ever, and where is it now! |

I've heard a rumour that this T50 is (was?) owned by a British industrialist called Harry Hyams. (I think this is the correct spelling) First time I saw a photo of this car was in Conway's Great Marques, the caption merely states it to be "from a private collection in England." Regards Johan |

Car was stolen and never found again. I managed to find the source of the rumour. Classic & Sports Car October 1989, p58, in an article about the Abbott bodied T50 (50126/eng.12) Mark Hughes writes as follows : "This particular Type 50, one of only four in England (the others being the 1931 Le Mans team car, owned by Stafford East, the Sauotchik saloon owned by Harry Hyams and a drophead foursome recently owned by Ian Preston), has been painstakingly rebuilt by David Holland etc." My assumption that Sauotchik bodied only one T50 may be wrong. Always loved that sauotchik Type 50- definitely the finest post war interpretation of what a Bugatti should look like (Veyron very much included). I always thought it looked a bit like a Jaguar Mk1 but when I thought about it some more I realised that it predated the Jag by a few years. maybe William Lyons took some inspiration from the Bugatti- I would bet my life that the XK120 was influenced by the Jean Bugatti Type 57s Roadster (57385) that eventually became the Ghia bodied roadster with the oval grille that vanished of the face of the earth as discissed earlier in this thread. |

I might be wrong but I thought Hyams was more of a property developer than an industrialist. Here are some notes from a friend's data-base : HYAMS, H.J. The owner, since 1950, of an unusual, dark blue1932 type 50 (50146) fitted, post war, with a fixed head coupé body by Saoutchik. It is said that the bodywork "was commissioned by an Englishman resident in Paris to provide his honeymoon transport". For an excellent colour photo of the car see Conway's "Great Marques" (p.70). The car is said to be fitted with either a Cotal or a Hobbs automatic gearbox. It carries the UK registration no.OXU 53. The internet contains several refernces to Hyams living in Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire. He is said to have extensive business interests in the area. A picture of the car (in the fifties ?) appears in “Bugatti Legends” (p.91). |

you can find many links to hyams in google etc. he seems to be a shy and a non-media man, even the BBC does`nt have his voice recorded, which means, he never gave an official interjew. but he was very present at the medias some years ago, when a gang of burglars broke in his manor and robbed antiques worth around 1oo mio. but it seemed , that they did`nt find the T50 . as far as I know, this car never appeared at ralleys etc. the color-pics come from the mid. 6o`s and the car has been a legend ever since. lucky finding mike |

This gentlemans honeymoon corresponded with the Paris motorshow where Jean Daninos showed the special Facel bodied Bentley cresta.There were 17 production versions and one very special and very pretty coupe.If you want to know what it looked like ......look at Hyams T50   I am almost certain that Harry saw that car and requested a copy on a T50 chassis.Harrys business associate [ mouse davies father ] built another one using a Type 50 motor,Later used by me in a T 50 bought from Mouse Davies son.Confusing isnt it ! The copy still exists with the family with a 3.8 litre jaguar motor.

Oh Lord I love it when Herman screws up! Especially when I am able to correct him in my inimitably patronising style ; you see, Herman, a T50 is not the same as a T57, just as a T57 is not the same as a T57S, which is what 57385 is or, perhaps, was. Okay now, Herman, you may have heard of a thing called Wiki, try looking up T50 and T57 and the differences should become quite clear to you. If not, try a book called Magnum, written by a guy called Hugh Conway. Perhaps you've heard of him? He never confused a T50 with a T57, nor a T57 with a T57S for that matter. For an utterly brilliant summary of the history of 57385 (a T57S - not a T50) please read my post, with photos, naturally, in the Bugatti Events and Auctions Forum. It should clear things up to perfection. The last time I had this much fun I was naked. And much younger. I am Johan. |
