Uwe alerted me to the above photo of a T57S chassis taken by Gerrit at the Schlumpf Museum, and when I saw it I nearly fainted! Herewith, courtesy of Wiki, the 9 Schlumpf T57S cars - all of them with coachwork :

Which begs the following questions regarding the first photograph - what is the history, the chassis number, the engine number and where is the coachwork?

As you can imagine, this conundrum is driving both myself and Uwe nuts, please help.

Simple conclusion.. The coachwork is placed next to the chassis… Will post a picture this evening when I am at home. If I remember correctly they have disassembled the blue / white car…

I'm a little disappointed truth be told, I had visions of some long-lost T57S being discovered in the basement of the Schlumpf. The reality, as usual, turned out to be more prosaic. I wonder why they didn't rather remove 57561's body? Mind you, I freely admit to being quite prejudiced against this particular post-war styling exercise. It looks a little bloated to my way of thinking.

Not at all, besides the original body is long gone. No, what I meant was if the Schlumpf wants to display a T57S in chassis only form, 57561 would have been a better candidate.

You may have noticed, the curators of the Schlumpf Museum tend not to ask for enthusiasts' blessings before they do things ; they picked an Atalante. So be it.

It is in a display showing the main components of the Bugatti:

Chassis, engine, interior, body. Really a very nice showpiece the way it is now. (as long as the car is owned by the museum, chances are little that it will be driven, so seeing it partly disassembled is a great way of leaning the anatomy of the car.)

I was wrong, this display would never have worked with 57561. I think it's great! And picking an Atalante does make sense, they have two others, plus a Gangloff Coupe that looks a bit like an Atalante.

Weird, I never thought I would like this sort of thing, but it looks stunning. Let's see now, they got the Coupe Napoleon running, they've revamped the displays, they are providing greater access to a select group of historians and collectors and, so it would seem, there are some truly exiting things happening in the workshops.

One of these days the Schlumpf Museum will leave us little to nothing to complain about. Frankly, I'll miss it, bitching about the state of the Schlumpf is such a time-honoured tradition!
