The drawing below was published in the Philippe Dejean book “Carlo-Rembrand-Ettore-Jean Bugatti” Under the picture is written “Volkswagen” Designed by Jean Bugatti. Is this the Type 65 Bugatti?

The car would be equipped with a 4 cylinder engine with a bore of 65 and a stroke of 80mm. The total cylinder capacity would have been 1,714 liter.

One of our fellow Bugatti model collectors Gerrit Bus has a scale version of this car in scale 1:43. See pictures below.

Is there anyone that can give us more information about this a strange looking Bugatti?

In the book "The Bugatti Story" by L'Ebe Bugatti it is said that the type 65 is only an engine. Not a car.

I will check if that book mentiones an engine size.

All I can do is to translate the writing....

No gearbox.Engine mounted directly above the rear wheels, with a hydraulic clutch. No diferential. One speed...
The car must be very light, so the gearbox will be unusefull.
NO CHASSIS the front wheels will be fixed directly to the body and will be independant....
Underneath, you find (right)the speed in front of the RPM...,left the hrse power...

Ettore Bugatti took part like jury in a contest of taxis organized by
the SIA, "Automobile engineer society". That makes me a little
think of that.
