Just participated in the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Reunion on June 5, 2011 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California with 37265.

You can see a video of the race at: http://vimeo.com/24844380 and the practice sessions in the rain at http://vimeo.com/24664153, and in the dry at http://vimeo.com/24634075

Here is a brief recap of the race:
Started in 7th place. There were 4 other Bugatti's in the field with T35B (Bill Lyons) starting in 8th, T39A (Charlie Shalvoy) starting in 9th, T35B (Mike Gertner) and T57 (Mike Cleary) starting further back.

Got a good start, and gained one position when Alta of Tom Price dropped back at start due to some mechanical issues.

First lap, I saw T35B of Bill Lyons using his 50 hp more down the back straight and ducking in the corner on turn 7. As a result, I tried to brake late to hold him off, and almost lost it! Fortunately, I got back on it, and still held T35B off going into turn 8.

Second lap, T35B uses power to pass me down back straight, but on turn 2 of next lap, he loses it and SPINS out, so I gain back my position.

Peter Giddings in his Alfa Romeo pulls out after 3 laps due to mechanical issues.

I almost catch Jim Stranberg in David Duthu's Talbot Lago, but then he puts on the 290 hp (compared to my 85hp) and powers away.

I am seeing T35B catch me again, and looks to be about 2 laps away from closing the gap. However, then we hit lapped traffic, and I am able to hold him off until the end.

Miller Ford Indy car pulls to the side on next to last lap, and I end up in 4th place!

Just got lapped by Alfa Romeo Tipo C, so I completed 10 laps total.

I was the highest finishing Bugatti in the Race. Not bad for a 4 cylinder type 37A with only 85 horsepower!

Overall Results - Top 15 spots, Class 1B:
1 - 1935 Alfa Romeo Tipo C, Peter Greenfield, 3800cc
2 - 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3, Jon Shirley, 3200cc
3 - 1949 Talbot Lago T26-C, Jim Stranberg, 4482cc
4 - 1927 Bugatti T37A, Andrew Larson, 1500cc
5 - 1927 Bugatti T35B, Bill Lyon, 2262cc
6 - 1929 Bugatti T39A, Charlie Shalvoy, 1500cc
7 - 1935 Railton LST, Ivan Zaremba, 4200cc
8 - 1933 MG LI, Ernie Page, 1086cc
9 - 1939 Lagonda V12, Richard Morrison, 4500cc
10 - 1931 Chrylser CD8 LeMans, Howard Swig, 5300cc
11 - 1928 Bugatti T35B, Mike Gertner, 2262cc
12 - 1932 Miller-Schofield Ford, John Kerr, 3310 cc
13 - 1939 BMW 328, John Fitzpatrick, 2000cc
14 - 1926 Frazer Nash Boulogne, John Kerridge, 1991cc
15 - 1932 Studebaker Indy, Kevin Pitts, 5506cc

I found a few event pictures of the Sonoma Historic with both race and practice pictures. Dennis Gray sent me a few thumbnails. He takes pictures for http://www.sportscardigest.com/sonoma-historic-motorsports-festival-2011-results-and-photos/ and also i found event pictures on http://www.allcarcentral.com/Sonoma_Historic_Motorsports_Festival_2011.html

This is at the start of the 3rd practice session in the rain. I just passed the BMW 328, and the Alfa Romeo tipo C passes me about 4 turns later.

This is going through the "esses" in turns 8 and 8A:

This is part of my battle with Bill Lyon's T35B. he passed me down the back straight with his superior horsepower.

However, on the next lap, in turn 2, he spins, and I get by him for the position. See my car behind his:

Previously, on this thread, there were some comments and suggestions about 37265, in relation to the early 1960s replica Grand prix body by O.A "Bunny" Phillips. As a result, I thought I would give an update on progress made with regard to trying to restore as much originality back to the body.

Here is a picture of 37265 shortly after the "roadster" body was taken off and restored with a Grand Prix Replica body by Bunny Phillips. This was taken at the Le Circle Concours D'Elegance, Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, California, May 1967
Image

Here is a picture of the Bunny Phillips Replica Grand Prix bonnet:
Image

This past year, I was able to secure both an original T37 bonnet from Europe, and also an original undertray. here is a picture of each:

Image

Image

Also, here was a picture of the old 37265 Bunny Phillips gearshift surround:
Image

As a result of your suggestions, we have reshaped the gear shift surround to look more original. here it is:

Image

Here is a picture of 37265 now with Original Bonnet, Original Undertray and newly shaped gear lever surround:
Image

Also, 37265 was supercharged in approx. 1948 by Jacques Pollet (ex-Formula One driver), although the car remained with coil ignition. Here is a picture with Jacques Pollet bending over with "unsupercharged" engine.
Image

Here is a picture from Jacques Pollet's collection with 37265 in supercharged form:
Image

Here is a picture of the dash with Jacques Pollet in 1948:
Image

Here is a picture of the dashboard, which I believe Bunny Phillips made, as it is different than the dash with Jacques Pollet.
Image

Although this may be controversial with many of you, in order to complete the conversion of 37265 to a full T37A spec., I added a magneto and changed the dash, with measurements from the Bugatti Trust, to be identical to an original T37A specification. (note: if this was an original dash, I would have left it alone.) Here is a picture of 37265 dashboard today:

As i am still a neophyte, and especially with acronyms, what is the MN4?

I was given some suggestions to use the Scintilla Vertex (spelling?), as they are supposedly very reliable, but this was not standard issue.

I believe the Bosch FH 8/4 magneto was standard issue on the T37A. Is this correct? That being said, I have not been able to secure an original FH 8/4 magneto yet, so this is a replica FH 8/4 magneto, made by Jim Stranberg at High Mountain Classics.

The dashboard opening for the magneto is per the Bugatti Trust drawings, so when I find an original Bosch FH 8/4 magneto, I can fit it in the hole properly.

did this answer your question?

thanks for asking!

Does anyone still believe that Bosch designed its magnetos to last for 80 years? You have made the right choice to use a new magneto.

It is German, so, 80 Jahre?, kein Problem! :)

Andrew, the front of the magneto looks very correct. Please show a picture of the other end. That might reveal the source of the parts that were used to construct this nice replica magneto.

Bugwrench,

Nice to hear from you! Hope you are well! Are you going to Monterey this year? I will not be there. not sure how close up of a picture I have of the back of the magneto. this is all I have for now:

Image

The car is at High Mountain Classics garage which is only about 30 minutes away. Maybe i can get some "back of magneto" pictures in the not too distant future?

What do you think about the other changes, as i had your "whisperings" in mind. I even told them to change some of the bolts around, so they would be correct, as you mentioned.

Cheers,

Andrew

I was able to find this picture of the dash, when we were putting the original bonnet and original undertray on, but I still could not find any pictures of the back of the magneto:
