Congratulations with the ownership of this wonderful gem!

First I have to apologize for having put a message on this forum which was incorrect. For 10 minutes I was under the impression this was the Essen car 57312. I put a remark on the Forum but within that time I realized I was wrong, and changed the contents.

I was hoping nobody had read the text but I was wrong again: this has lead to the confusion in the WIKI. There is no doubt this is 57252. It has been changed recently (the headlamp configuration has been returned to its original shape) so, Claire, can you tell us who did this, and when it was done? I presume it was done by the previous owner who sold the car to your father? Who was the restorer?

It taught me how careful one should be and also how intensive the Forum is read!

My experience is that one cannot be careful enough with any information, and my general motto is "trust but verify". But as many of you know in the Wiki it is not all what it seems.

The picture of the above car is my own Atalante 57432 about 18 years ago around 1991 with Bernard Merian. However, it now has black rims on the wheel covers just as it originally had in 1936 (this is how I bought it). By the way, I have never seen this pic before.

Claire, can you tell me the size of the wheels? Are they 18 inch?

The car should have Lockheed hydraulic brakes, just as my own car, which was an option in 1936. Only two years later Bugatti introduced their own hydraulic brakes (Ettore was very much resistant to this change, but finally was persuaded ).

I will make a correction text in NLB-3 and add your ownership if you are OK with it. Can you tell me the other numbers?? (such as front axle, gearbox, rear axle, frame, torque arm?)

Fitting the modified Lockheed brakes to an early rigid engine T57 is not easy.I would like to see just how this was done in the factory.I converted a car from Japan to use a set of these special Lockheed/Bugatti brakes.I include some photos.The odd swingle tree arrangement is entirely mine own ! Using a T73 roadcar brake cylinder casting.The brakes worked fine but would have greatly benefited from a servo.A quite heavy shove was required to stop the car.

I am glad everybody is happy again.

Yes, this forum is read intensively, with about 500-1000 individual people watching daily. (not counting search engines, spambots and myself, I am filtering that all out)

Also the Bugattiregister.com wiki has a nice share of enthusiasts. (approx 100-200 / day)

The yellow wheel discs actually look not bad at all, I must say.

Good remark on the conversion to hydraulics, which Ettore had done before, but did not like it at that time. I will open a new thread on that:

Herewith also a picture of my car with its present wheel covers, and a slightly corrected page from Vol II of our register.

I take it it has a type I engine? You can recognize it amongst others by the exhaust configuration: maybe you can send a picture of the outlet side?

Ettore was against hydraulic brakes after having experimented with it without much success very early on (filled with water)but as more and more clients requested to buy the car with the optional Lockheed brakes he finally gave in to the arguments probably of Jean

I would still like to know what happened to the other 2 Grand Raid faux cabriolets - atalantes;

57263 del 8 june 1935
57325 del 1 july 1935

Have they survived?

Also wiki has been updated to show previous owner is Edgar Bensoussan - are we sure about this as we have had so many different spellings of names?

Final point - where in text can I see that Dovaz owned this car once ?

In our book "the fate of the sleeping beauties', that will appear in a very short time in English, is statewt, that the car was bought in 1950 by Dovaz in the Paris garage of Ben Shaschoua. In 1956 he sold the car to Jean de Dobbeleer. I have very often contact with Michel. If you, Claire, wants some more informations of that period, I will ask Michel. Just let me know. The global rest of the history of this var you can read in our book.

So the owner before Dovaz is spelt Ben Shaschoua, as the Wiki has been amended to show Edgar Bensoussan. Herman - do you think we should change the name back again?

I honestly have no idea of the correct spelling. I would suggest making a comment on the wiki with several spellings of the name, as they have been found, so at least the search facility can trace them all down.

Once firm proof of a correct spelling is found, we can always change again.
