This is great, I've never seen this car before. Thanks Martijn, needless to say I know nothing about it whatsoever. I wonder if there's enough space for rear seat(s)?

I am almost certain that this is the work of ELGE or Maleyre & Cie., a carrossier at 118, rue Malbec, Bordeaux. This firm was directed by Roger-Louis Maleyre and did about fifteen Bugattis. One of its products is shown in Carlo-Rembrandt-Ettore-Jean BUGATTI by Philippe Dejean, page 308.

I found this picture in Thoroughbred & Classic Cars from june 2002
it was in an add for the Christie's auction in june 2002
the caption was ' a selection of racing pictures from Elisabeth Junek's collection"

funny to see that when you put up a picture at the photo site it finds its way to different forums

When looking again to the picture I suddenly get in doubt that it is a GP car… The radiator looks like one.. As is the total length of the car… But imagining getting in such a car via a door and with a roof on top of you I get the feeling that this is close to impossible… So… GP Bugatti owning forum members… Please take some cardboard and a pair of scissors… And show us if it is possible or not….

if the doors were rear hinged, I think it would work in terms of access to the seats. With the front hinged setup shown, I think it was probably quite the challenge to get in/out of.

Curious to see the seat setup arrangement within and the door sill area. I know that when Sutherland owned the T51/Dubos coupe, the coachwork was quite a bit wider and it was still a narrow cockpit when sitting inside it. (it was "cozy" to use a descriptive term)

Any one have more pictures? It truly is a unique little T35!

The car in the bottom photo is said to have a body made from reinforced concrete. What could possibly have been the thinking behind using reinforced concrete for a car body?

How dull this world would have been without folly.

"Re-enforced concrete"

Aston Martin V8's from c1970 to the late 1980's had under carpet sound deadening that was a sandwich of lead and foam.

Terrific decison for a car that was already a bloater and leaked like a sieve. Heaving out the sound deadening with sponge soaked and heavy with water was no fun. Also did not help the already serious rust problems.

What licence plate is on the car ? Anyone out there with access to a more sharper image?

To me it looks like a German plate ... IZ xx837 (?)

Just had another look at the photo from the David Burgess-Wise article ; I wonder if they are of the same car? The scuttle seems to be slightly different and the Registration number is 5891 - P3.

Thanks Christian!

You are correct ; the bottom photo is definitely the T38 and not the same car as the one posted by Martijn. Now I'm even more curious about the mystery T35. If it is a T35 that is, Martijn has doubts.

Getting back to the T38, wasn't there a similar 4-door body on either a T38 or T44 chassis?

Thanks again

Bonjour Christian and hello Johan

For some obscure reason I am unable to see your reference. Must ask Herman why. However, below you find a picture either of a type 30 or a 38, I am not sure which. If I remember correctly, the car belonged to the manager of the Casino de Deauville and was written up in Motor Sport some 50 years ago.As soon as I find it it will be posted but that might take some time.

As to the number plate, to me it looks rather from Tshecho Slovakia than fromGermany. This wouold also be more logic since the picture originated from mme. Junek. Regards Jacobug
