Would anyone have a good source of where to purchase vintage race car number decals? I need some new numbers for my T37A, and it seems like most of the places I find have modern looking race numbers.

Preferably in the US, but with credit cards and shipping and the internet, I'll take any recommendations!

Thanks!

Any sticker printer should be able to do whatever you like. Just give them a couple of prints with numbers you like, and they should be able to find a font that gives you nice looking numbers. Personally, I really like the number "2" with closed loop. No clue of what font it is, however...

Very quick, very good quality, very good price from French page of the following site:

Not ideal for US, but may help somebody out!

Up until the late 1950's, race numbers were hand painted on racing cars; no vinyl at all!

What would be a good number font to consider using, that is similar to the numbers used on the race cars in the late 1920s?

Take some old photos as reference, and a roll of tape, and paint them on?

Each race, I have to apply for a number, so I am not guaranteed a certain number in each race. As a result, I will/may need to take off the numbers for the next race. How easy/difficult would it be to remove the paint? and would it damage the paint of the car underneath?

Check for a product called "Spraylat". This is a paint used to temporarily pain structures (like TV studios, cars, etc.)

It can be peeled off.

Just checked into Spraylat at www.spraylat.com

My contact was Mike Mackery in the Sign division. He said they sell through Sign supply distributors in the US. A gallon costs about $40, and can be sprayed on or applied with a brush and roller. Colors were white and transparent blue (baby blue) that gets darker with more applications. You need to put about 15 mils on wet, and it will dry to about 4-5 mils, so it is thick enough to peel off properly.

Once you put the paint on, you can remove it, by peeling it off. The product we would be interested in is called, "Sign Strip".

Thanks Herman!

found a great guy in the US that has good vintage race number fonts, and can also find additional fonts.

his contact info is:

Doug Warneke
Race Sign Specialist
email: info@racesignspecialists.com
web: www.racesignspecialists.com

phone 818-559-2247

I used him for the "9" and the "4127-J4" on 37265, so you can see his numbers in the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 pics on the white T37A.

Great info. This makes the forum a wealth of knowledge. I really should put this info in the WIKI again.

Dear Herman, without wishing to appear negative or disaproving I must point out that it is in some countries illegal to drive with racing numbers on the road, and it is also very bad form...

There are more things illegal, and no Bugatti owner or any other car owner seems to care... I mention speeding, red lights (Jean Prick, anyone?) and more, but I do not mention bullshitting with chassis numbers...

Driving around with race numbers worries me the least.

Besides that, this website is not only about driving Bugattis on the road, but about everything Bugatti. Including racing.

Personally I would paint them on freehand, after 1920's fonts, but due to lack of a Bugatti, I never tried. On a Ford Mondeo they look not even half as good... Did paint a lot of numbers on boats though...

Other people like other systems, like vinyl lettering, and it is always good to have multiple options.
