Post subject:  Royale engine
I have a question about the Royale engine .There is a rail from the crankshaft centre at front ,taper down to the back . It looks like , the later engines do not have this rail . Some pictures show no screw heads , some have the screw heads from top and some sideways . So , what is normal for a Royale engine ?

The type 50 has similar supports, although in modified form. Perhaps someone can answer the same for these?

It looks like , every Royale has a differend engine.
One drawing shows the sump with the rail , next one without the rail .
Drawings exist for one spark plug each side , and both plugs at one side .
Piston with 130mm and 125mm.
so , maybe there is no typical Royale engine .
Bugattis pencil sketches show he made changes all the time .

There are differences between some of the Royale sumps, but bear in mind you have included a photo of the Esders sump- which is a railcar engine and completley different and also the Wheatctoft engine which is just a modern replica.
The alluminium angle that is fixed to the sides of the engine follow the same plane as the taper of the chassis and support the sheet alluminium closer to keep the road dirt out.

I know that the Esders has a railcar engine , and it is not correct . But the Wheatcroft engine , is it a new made one ? Or a converted railcar engine . Is the alluminium angle riveted to the sump ? In one of the pencil sketches it looks like cast together with the sump .

For the Wheatcroft car a new engine was made (two in fact), no railcar engine was used.

The Wheatcroft engines were facsimiles of the Royales using factory drawings when available. Certain areas were modified for more modern and reliable use- crankshaft bearings and lubrication system for instance. I was surprised to discover recently that instead of the generator being geared directly from the output shaft of the clutch, it is in fact a modern alternator driven off from a fan belt.

So the Wheatcroft car is a " look like" Royale . I was looking at this chassis in the time it was build .

after looking at some more drawings and fotos , I think this rail is screwed on , and maybe some engines have countersunk heads what looks like rivets . Or can it be rivets ?
Anybody has some cutaway drawings , side and front ?
