Take a look at these pictures!

Regardless of any originality issues: It does look fabulous! Some would say, even better than the other 2.

The color looks right too; no flashy metallics (though it may be original), or a black EXK-6.

Absolutely right,A fabulous car regardless of its level of "originality"

A couple more photos from the Tour d'elegance. So far I think my money is on the Ex-Harrah Graber Duesenberg J for BOS this year. I like the new colours a lot. Also nice to see Simon Moore's Alfa at PB apparently freshly restored or at least resprayed.

Thanks for the link to Sportscardigest.com - I agree with you, the Duesenberg is stunning, I believe the car is owned by multiple Pebble Beach winner Sam Mann, but he recently sold a Bohman & Schwartz SJ so I'm not sure if he kept the Graber or moved it on to a new owner as well. Stunning restoration, did you ever see his 2009 Pebble entry? A beautiful Hispano K6 with coachwork by Brandone, and he remains the only entrant to ever win Pebble with a Voisin ; Mr. Mann has an exceptional appreciation for automotive beauty - he owns the two most beautiful Delages ever made.

As to the Bugatti, it moves me. I like quoting Yeats:

"Consider beauty a sufficient end"

Yes, I think the Graber J (or is it an SJ?) is still owned by the Manns from NJ. I don't know about the Bohman SJ, but I recall that he does also own a stunning Duesy with Figoni body, but that car has a bit of a complicated history as the original body and chassis got separated a long time ago. So I think that's still a future project to reunite them for a genuine original car.

The Mann collection is certainly among the very finest in the world today, apart from the cars you mentioned he does also own a stunning original MB 540K long tail Special Roadster, an 8C 2900B Touring Spyder and of course the 57 S.

I think PB is running out, of exeptional pre-war car's and many Collectors prefer to sell, than to show up.
This Atlantic might be the most beautiful Bugatti, if it where real. Maybe sometimes, some rich guy will lead a case, like for Ferrari P3-4 #0844, to try, to make it real.

The Winning Car is nice, but the de Villars Roadster of the Mann Family is much more beautiful.

Jörg

There are still pre-war exceptional automobiles out there being discovered, procured and being restored. Question will be when does PB finally recognize a post WWII automobile for Best of Show? I'm still thinking we are at least 7-10 years out at least. And will we possibly see a "non restored" car (original finish / history documented) possibly win as well one day?

If tired cracked old paint is your idea of "Concours d'elegance" in america then you may well see that happen one day. Most normal people prefer shiny pretty cars.I think a catagory for real cars in original condition is a good one.But where will you find them?I would prefer to look at those than the over glitzed restorations which predominate these days.

good morning john !

they indeed have/had an award for " unrestored/original" cars at PB , with wonderfull cars over the last years ( horch 853, bugatti T57, a voisin tourer and several brass-cars)
even top-collector of overrestored cars, arturo keller had a winnig car in that cathegorie

kind regards
mike

Maybe, we are all wrong and like the things, 'old european style'.
Looking at ferrarichat, the big discussion is only about the results, of the last auctions and whether the prices will go up again and how much, they went down.
The americans prefer their world more in a modern shiny Las Vegas Style.
PB was created to expose best restoration and winning depends much, which restorer restored your car. There is a lot 'new money' in the old car business and cars where converted in investment.
The business is now bubbeld for restorers, auctioneers and brokers. To sell a high price car, you need years, with bad luck, you have to bit on your own car and pay the comission. Auctions, or brookers are charching up to 25% comission. The Car must be transported to fairs, etc. For the new owners, there is no winning, it's only, how much you will loose.
You can't buy culture, it's a growing process and this is reflected in overrestoring cars. They want to present their investment in the best possible way, perfect.

Regards
Jörg

Dear Mark:

If I read my Pebble Beach catalog correctly, the first five winners of the Pebble Beach Concours were all post-war cars! Judging by the entries this year, I suspect another post-war "BOS" car will be in the next two or three years.

Cheers,

Sandy
