New Type 64??

What does everyone think about this? I think it's a sacrilege to built a modern body around an original chassis...

had already seen the plans, they are shown in Peter Mullin's book on the museum
wich is the first of three books
not sure what to think of it since the plans for the body are made new

Well, building a new body an an existing Bugatti chassis has been excepted practice since a long time. Mr. Mullin likes to drive his T64, and a body would be indeed nice to have. Taking an existing original design might have been easier to do. I guess what we need to wait for, is if the new body has an orginal feel about it.

What I understood is, that the body will be easily removable.

And, some modern designs on the Bugatti theme can be good, like Terry Cook's Bugnotti!

Building a new body on a chassis which has always been bare is not a bad idea. Of course, I also think that it would have been better to do it according to one of the original designs by Jean Bugatti for the T64. The body on chassis 64003 is not original, but it was built following a factory design. It seems that among those original factory designs there was a gullwing body; chassis 64002 could be fitted with it.

The real crime is to destroy an original body which could have been restored and replace it with a completely new body, usually with a poorer design.

By the way, in the wiki there is a entry (without any content, by now) for chassis 64004. Does anyone know something on this chassis?

did not schlumpf have a completely bare T64 frame?

Yes, that must be chassis 64004; I do not think that chassis will ever become a complete car, unlike Peter Mullin´s T64.

I believe Robert Jarraud, author of "Doubles Arbres" also has a T64. If memory serves me correctly, it is on frame no. 5.

If this information is right, we would be speaking of five T64 chassis produced. I think that those are too many chassis for being prototypes.

I have read several times that the company made the prototype of the T64 but it was unable to produce it for the lack of money for the development of the new car and the necessary retooling. If 5 cars were produced, that theory could be wrong. A better theory would be that Bugatti finished the prototype of the T64 to be presented at the Paris Motor Show of October 1939 and a first batch of chassis (4 apart from the prototype) were being produced to be delivered at the orders which could be received at that Motor Show. Those first cars would be delivered with an engine still strongly based on the T57, with the engine sizes of this latter type; afterwards, the standard production would use engines with the planned displacement of 4.400 cc.

If all this were true, the T64 was actually ready to be placed into production, but this production was stopped just for the outbreak of World War II.

It would be interesting to know if Jarraud's car is complete, with a T64 engine (that would be the fourth T64 engine) and whether the car has a body or it is in chassis stage. If it has a body fitted, it would be the only T64 complete (chassis + T64 engine + body) apart from the prototype; at least until Mullin's car receives its body.
