It had fetched US $490,000 earlier, but is now relisted. Probably the high bidder did not deliver the cash. It seems that the 2nd bid of 430,000 was not enough for the seller.... I'd rather have the Kellogg car, if you ask me... |

When it sold at an auction a few years ago for about $100k Jerry Saul bought it and made it into a hot rod. Then John O'Quinn bought it later without knowing anything about it, he bid against a chandelier until the chandelier stopped swinging . John died in a car crash and this is one of his 1000 cars he bought mostly at auctions. As Steve McQueen said in the Thomas Crown Affair '' You paid too much''. Buy the brake drums for it on ebay, they are going cheap! |

Strangely enough,I was offered these same two backplates over twenty years ago from the same seller.I was as usual pennyless and could not afford to buy them. Now of course I have the original Bugatti factory patterns and could make new...I have found it strange that although these castings are symetrical except for the boss for the spring bolt,no attempt was made to use one pattern for both sides. It could have been done easily with a loose piece in the pattern. And this was in Paris during the war when money and materials were in short supply. The quality of work in the patterns is extraordinary.
