Art?- Davinci must be sh***ing himself!

not art? So why do I call it art? Because the art Professor from the Strasbourg university calls it art? The art teacher Odile Mathis, from the school Emile Mathis in Strasbourg, made this project. A school in Colmar maufactured this plastic parts . ( in youtube - Mathis 333 ). Last Saturday was the opening of the "Place De Dietrich " in Straßburg with 200 invited guests and cars of Bugatti and Mathis. And of course the type 5 . This Art was especially made for this day . How can all these people make the mistake of calling it art? Maybe because thye are all French? I will tell them , so this mistake will not happen again . Next time we will ask a small mechanic from England before this mistake happen again.

I must mention that I feel that your rendering is a technical adaptation from the original.This technical process I taught for many years in an HMC public boarding school whilst running the art design and technology department.
The definition Art can be applied when you then use this vacuum forming to create a new visual concept.
I enjoy the pieces of artwork that use Bugatti shapes to create a new visual idea-as seen on this site- using body screws and pressure guages in a new situation...

the definition of art is a contentious issue if ever there was one. I worked as a model maker in the film industry for over twenty years and vac forming sheets of plastic over a tool was just a quick means of creating an effect as simply as possible. Even at my most pompous and egotistic, I never for a moment considered it a form of art. My own view of what makes something into a piece of art is when someone produces something that makes me take a step back and marvel at the skill of it's creator and think "I could not make that".

It looks that both of you are right. During the last 150 years many books about theory of art were written. I think I have several of them and I must add that I haven't been reading any of them. I don't feel unhappy with it. I doesn't disterb me to profess everyday. I think that your disscusion about what is art and what is not it's only the resalt of your (Udo and Greg) animosity.
DISPUTE OR QUIBBLE IT'S OLSO ART. But the condition is to have an esteem to each other.
I THINK THAT THE BEST IS TO USE SUCH A RULE: DON'T EVALUATE AND COMPARE EVERYBODY BUT THINK IS THAT WHAT WE SEE GIVES US SOMETHING NEW OR STIMULATE US TO OTHER FEELINGS. THAT THE SENCE OF WATCHING REALITY AND CREATIVITY.
In other words I can not have any pretension to child that draws as it do but I can not say it is not creativity. I can not critic somebody who is not talented but doing something gives it much work. This work is olso valuable.
Each of as has his own way and it's difficult to compare and evaluate them but we can find the common points to disscus. SO I PROPOSE IT EVERYBODY.
I have 3 friends on this forum that I appreciate them and I like to speak with them. Those talks gives me new wide horizons. And that is developing and creativity.

For what its worth, I personally feel no animosity for Udo whatsoever. If anything I find it quite entertaining.

I hesitate to get embroiled in any controversy but this one is close to my heart. Art is about ideas and in their communication. It is not about skill but skill may be a prerequsite to getting ideas across and explaining them. This could be in writing, poetry, painting, music, sculpture, architecture etc. Some years ago I did an MA course in Fine Art. There was a Japanese girl who presented as her 'end of term' work, a fridge filled with concrete. She has taken a common household utensile and rendered it utterly useless for anything. Quite shocking, in fact. The world's resources and energy had been expended in the making of a functional piece of equipment only for someone to destroy it. Her propersition provoked much discussion. Was it Art? Yes. Was any skill involved? Absolutely none at all. When I tried to move the fridge,I expected it to be quite immovable but it was quite light. I then discovered that it had only a thin layer of concrete on polystyrene. To me, this presentation was Art but not very good art and it totally lacked in integrity.

Udo's cars are art. The industrial medium used presented me with an evocotive form, it is indistinct but powerful. It suggests but does not explain. It is quite subtle and I like the contrast in textures. It may not be 'great art' but it does make me think and it gives me pleasure. Skill? I have no idea. Possibly the skill is in the 'thinking' of doing it in the first place. (this can also be said of my fellow student)

Ettore Bugatti was inventive and creative. He might also have been overbearing, interested in making money and vain as well as a snob and a bore. Who knows and who cares? But he was to my mind, an artist. He presents us with his ideas in the form of functional and useful things whose every part has an elegance and beauty in form and the use and juxtoposition of materials and the whole has balance and composition;mobile architecture, in fact. His works are both industrial design and industrial art and, like architecture, made or constructed by others. This is important to remember. Brunelleschi's dome of Florence Cathedral, for instance considered to be a very great work of art (as well as an application of scientific principals) but he didn't actually build it himself, he got others to do that. Molsheim-built cars have historical interest and because of that, great value but they are no more of a work of art than one built by Joe Blogs.

I applaud those who get pleasure in re-creating Ettore's art and entering into the mind of their creator. These 'bugattibuilders' ARE creating art, Ettore's art, providing that it is done with integrity.

Maybe I made a mistake with showing only this plastic cars , and not the full story . I will look what fotos exist about it . I believe you will be surprised about it .

This plastic art is not made with model cars you can buy in a shop. First we made a 3D drawing from fotos and some dimensions . With the milling mashine I make 2 sizes , 7 cm and 30 cm long .

after we have the 7 and 30 cm models , the children make in the school the plastic parts .

as a side product we have this plastic art .

but the real reason for all of it , is to have small chocolate and cake cars . We use the negativs to make them .So if we have a meeting with Bugatti people or Mathis or others , we have the right food .
