For as far as I know not all cars have been supplied with elephants. The original that was on the Coupe Napoleon has been auctioned recently (for 238.000 euro I believe!) Greg? |

I bought an elephant similar to the Bonhams one for just over 100 dollar... And a bronze one for less than 20. However it is a bit lopsided. I doubt there were many originals. I really should check old photos to count them. |

Dear Herman and all: At the May 22, 1990 "Magnificent Marques" Christie's auction, held in conjunction with the (attempted) sale of several of the Uwe Hucke Bugattis, the original elephant of the "prototype" was offered and can be found in one of the 3-book auction catalog set. I quote from the catalog: "In autumn 1931, Ettore Bugatti left Molsheim to drive to Paris with his daughter L'Ebe and a mechanic, Mr. Bande, but soon after Nancy, he fell asleep at the wheel and the Royale drove off the road. Ettore Bugatti suffered (a)severe concussion and L'Ebe fractured her arm. On impact, the elephant snapped at its hind legs and was retrieved by Mr. Bande, the mechanic." "Later for the short series of the Royale, new mascots were made from a die of the original cast in bronze and silver-plated." "During the Second World War, Ettore Bugatti reclaimed this mascot and arranged its repair." The original elephant was silver (not silver-plated) and the repaired base was a visible brass. I have the possibility to buy the original pattern to cast the elephant . A little expensive , but if it is original , it is OK . I just like to be sure , so I need a foto .Is the Volkswagen elephant real ? |

So many of the topics dealt with in this forum have been dealt with in well illustrated articles in Bugantics. A member of the forum has already scanned all back-numbers. What a shame they could not be published on a CD as has happened with, inter alia, Brescia Bits and Motor Sport. |
