Here is a poor photo of the original drawing of the transmission / transaxle.Power is taken from the centre of the engine.

I think pictures from the car and parts would be better to understand the design

On the offchange that someone on this site is actually interested in a Bugatti Builder...here is progress on our new T251 engine/transmission assembly. It is 56 years since this type of engine was last made.Having the original factory patterns has been life changing for this project.Apart from the odd small piece, most patterns exist still.I had to make new "loose" pieces for the gearbox pattern.Using photos and small clues such as marks on the corebox showing where loose pieces have been lost. The small second half of the two piece gearbox case has yet to be sorted.I have all the coreboxes but not the outer pattern print.I am very glad that we have this round the right way ! If we had the outer pattern but not the coreboxes it would be impossible. The new outer pattern can be reconstructed from the coreboxes and also from photos. The mating face on the larger half gives us the necessary shape of the missing bit.

And even more,The sump is another case where we had the coreboxes but not the outer print.A visit to the original car resulted in photos and drawings with measurements which enabled a new outer print to be made. The " water closets " on the end of the blocks were yet another case where the coreboxes were available but not the outer print.Surprisingly there were three separate cores for this small and relatively simple part.

Great stuff John. Do you intend to build an exact copy of the original?
I read somewhere that Roland stuck his beak in and insisted the design should be modified to have non independent suspension and this was the reason that it was a piece of junk.

Interestingly, the maclaren chassis designer told me that he and his mates at maclaren considered this design to be many years ahead of its time.He also said that a current F1 team tried an F1 car without suspension recently....Beam axles could under certain conditions be considered better than an independant setup. The reality is that the Bugatti factory were unable to produce this car. [ Colombo said it less politely than this ] The crossover shock absorbers and coil springs were drawn up for an independant wishbone arrangement. This was not really compatible with beam axles.

This may amuse some of you.In the above photos you will see the clutch/flywheel housing on the left hand end of the gearbox case.In this photo of an actual machined componant [ on the schlumph spare engine ] you will see that there is a modification in the form of two rivited angles holding the case together. This is because the flywheel will not fit through the available hole in the end !
