Post subject: | Car 4483 |
This car has an obscure history. However the following facts are undisputed : 1. It carries an original “chassis plate” attached to the front bulkhead stamped with the no. “4483”. 2. Eight cylinder single camshaft cars of several different types made in the twenties had chassis plates in the range 4001 to 4965. The Grand Prix cars from the early twenties were known as type 30 and the type 30A designation was used by the factory for the first two hundred Grand Prix cars based on type 35 factory drawings. 3. Car “4483” was delivered to the London, UK Bugatti agency in 1925. 4. A collection of Grand Prix chassis parts (accompanied by a UK registration document dating from 1971 referring to a vehicle described as a Type 35 with a chassis no. 4483 and an engine capacity of 1991cc -consistent with an eight cylinder car of 60 x 88 bore/stroke) was obtained by John Barton from David Akehurst but its origins are not known. 5. John Barton embarked on the recreation of a Grand Prix Bugatti to type 35B specifications. The project included original chassis and gearbox components with major mechanical components including engine, gearbox and rear axle internals from Crosthwaite and Gardiner. The completion of the project was funded by Andrew Crisford with engineering work carried out by Neve Engineering & C&G. 6. The car was inspected by David Sewell in April 1995 when genuine front axle, rear axle and gearbox were noted. He mentioned a chassis frame lacking front and rear ends which had been completely refurbished and later commented the he did not refer to the originality of the side rails but was certain that had he been of the opinion that they were replicas he would have recorded that fact. At this time there was no engine fitted but he mentioned that there was the possibility of including a type 38A (2 litre eight cylinder supercharged) crankcase. 7. The completed car carried the registration no. XG 9569. The V5 registration document records the car as a type 35 Bugatti with a 1991cc engine with no. 70 and chassis 4483 originally registered in May 1972. Barton’s ownership is recorded from February 1993 to November 1994 with Crisford thereafter. 8. In 2000 the car was registered for VSCC racing by Crisford as a type 35 (“now 35B”) and chassis (4483), front axle, rear axle casing and gearbox casing were declared as original Bugatti. The car was used in VSCC events at Prescott and Silverstone driven by Bill Goodall. 9. The car is listed in the 2000 British Bugatti Register (p. 69) as a type 35B (not a type 35B/R.) 10. The car was acquired Graham Little in early 2004 in a deal involving his 1922 Grand Prix Sunbeam and was used by him on the road and in competition. It was driven by Geraint Owen in the international “Williams Trophy” race in 2005 and won the race ahead of several experienced Bugatti racers driving professionally prepared supercharged Grand Prix cars. 11. In 2007 the car was acquired by Chris Hudson in the UK in a deal involving a type 13 and the car is currently being prepared for the Historic Monaco event. According to David Sewell the number 4483 is recorded in the “Factory Production Records” as relating to a car (fitted with engine no. 437) which was delivered to Colonel Sorel in London on the 19th May, 1925. |
