Why a type 50 engine

1- Nobody is doing a straight 8 engine. Ive seen 1's, 2's, I4 and V4, V8, Radial 5, 7, 9, 14, 18's

2 - If you consider the fact that all cylinders are in line that makes the crank and cams alot easier to make. The T50 also has only 2 valves per cylinder unlike the offy with 4.

3 - It, in my opinion, is an awesome looking engine for a I8. The swirled finishes on the crankcase covers and such looks awesome.

Some info from the mentioned thread:

This guy is going to make a V8 4-stroke glowplug engine. 80cc, so 10cc per cilinder.

Material for block and cilinder: Alu (AL 6061-T6
Cilinder walls will be steel, with honed interior. (can be placed by heating the whole unit to 200 degrees, the difference in expansion makes it possible to place the seperate walls)
Piston ring (only one) will be nodular steel

About jamming due to heat: crank will be ballbearing. camshaft will be plain bearing in sinterbronze, so most of the problem will be the cilinder and the wall. A piston ring will solve that hopefully.

Carbs: This guy will buy 4 standard carbs.

Cooling: water

Lubrication: via the fuel. small channels will lubricate the camshaft.

Some tips from knowledgable reader:
For the cilinder walls, take hot rolled steel, not cold rolled. (better lubrication)
Keep the cilinder walls dry, so let the water only touch aluminium. This to prevent corrosion.
Piston rings could be difficult to make. A solution may be to turn them from a tube, then splice them (with 50% change of succes)

Many parts can be made from HSS drill steel (shop around for worn out large dia drills)

Once you get things rolling, I can ask the guy tot pop up here, and give you even more info.

The fact that he is doing a V8 is of little concern. But material choice and hardening techniques are interesting.

I have most of the details worked out as far as getting parts built and materials used. The thing i need is specific info for the engine.

Have any of you ever heard of Classic & Exotic Service? They are in troy michigan. I was at the Autorama at cobo hall today and they had a beautiful t57 there. Fresh restoration. The fellows at the display said their boss Brian Joseph may be able to help with some info. I sent an e-mail to him and am waiting for a reply.

I have gone through Barrie Price T46 & T50, but no drawings.

Nothing in Conways "Bugatti" either. Maybe in Magnum Bugatti? I need to check.

Well there doesn't seem to be any info out there. I've decided that the internal's of the engine will be of my own design and the outside will be as close as i can get using the few pictures i have.

If you have a photo or two of the t50 engine, Could you please e-mail them to stevehuckss396@yahoo.com. Mostly picks of engines out of the car or disassembled engines would be great. As things progress i'll post some pictures from time to time if possible.

If i can gather enough info maybe i'll do another one at a later date. I'll be checking back here from time to time so if you have any leads on info, the search is still on. I would like to say thanks to all that helped, especially Herman. Thank you for your time and your help.

Steve
