Read about this in Memoirs of a Bugatti hunter.

Intrigued, so asked the question on a specialist metal finishing forum from the States.

Funny, my father talked about this long, long time ago, even before I got interested in Bugattis. He helped restore a (probably) type 46, and a type 35.
