Question: Does anybody know the reason for changing the logo. The old logo has squares, the newer one has dots.

Also, when did this change occur? was that 1924?

Did they run out of square paint?

Herman when did they ever use squares? I thought the white oval with red dots along the edge dated back to the Deutz designs. After he set up on his own, Bugatti simply replaced the Deutz name. So you see Stuart, they never needed to use the square paint, which explains why it's still in a vault in Piech-the-Impaler's moated castle.

It's Friday, and pay-day!!!!

Above a Bugatti type 15. Square paint still in stock.
Below a Bugatti type 57S badge. Round dots...

Gentlemen,

I think Conway in one of his books payed attention to the switch from square to rounded dots. I can't remember which book though. And to read them all again just to find this item??? I don't have enough time right now.

Regards, Jeroen

It is in the 1st third of Grand Prix Bugatti. Possibly as a caption to a picture.

I am on holiday, so don't have the book to hand.

From memory, 1926? Mentioned whatever date it was to Richard Day and to quote he said "it is not quite as simply as that". Don't know the story behind that remark.

Regards

Well Herman this must be particularly satisfying for you. Allowing me to make an absolute ass of I myself, and then not gloating about it. Nice, very classy. As a sign of my abject surrender, I shall spend the rest of this Saturday night with Stuart's Grand Prix Bugatti. When I find the relevant bits, I'll do another post. Feel free to make snotty comments then.

I swear, I really did not know that Ettore ever used squares, I thought it was always little red dots. Live and learn hey?

I am wrong!

Came to me as a flash of inspiration! The book is Bugatti by Ronald Barker and is a caption to a picture! The forward was by Hugh Conway. It is not GP Bugatti!

I can put away the exclamation mark now!!!!!

Wonderful. Great. Just bloody marvellous! It would, of course, be the one book I do not have. Now my ruined reputation shall never recover. I just never learn do I?

Does any-one else know the answer to this conundrum? My curiosity is driving me nuts.

Got my in-laws to scan book for you guys:

Image - Page 82

Still no answer to why and a definitive date.

As usual with manufacturing, the answer could be as simple as a load of badges hanging around and mingled with new versions, until the old versions are used up.

I will check tomorrow. Time to go to sleep now.

Edit: Stuart posted exactly the same time as me. No need to check anymore. However, the exact date, and the "why" still stands.

Also, the "it is not quite as simply as that". from Richard Day intrigues me. It is time for some mail exchange, I think...

The question of dots is dealt with in the late Hugh Conway's excellent video available from the English Bugatti Owners Club.

Funny thing is that I was browsing though the photo server for images of the logos, and I found a couple of type 13's with round dots...

Could be a restorer not doing his homework?
