Maserati Bugatti ???

I found this picture of the 1932 Targa Florio, with the caption "Maserati Bugatti":

And here slightly enlarged:

It looks like a Bugatti chassis with Bugatti wheels (bolt on rims), but supposedly with a Maserati engine. Does anyone have more information on this car?

Extract from Graham Little's recently published "Bugatti's People".

PREMOLI, Count Luigi “Gigi”.

An Italian aristocrat born in 1908 who started racing in 1929 with an 1100cc Salmson. He is said to be a talented engineer and his improvements to the Salmson enabled him to score some significant results. In 1932, with the help of Egidio Galimberti, he developed his special said to be based on a 2.3 GP Bugatti but with a 2,500cc 8 cylinder supercharged straight-eight Maserati engine and radiator cowl. Premoli won the 1932 Colli Torinesi and then had a serious crash at the Montenero Circuit Race but was fully recuperated for the 1933 season. The car was thoroughly reworked and improved for 1933 with a 3-liter 8-cylinder Maserati engine. The car was used in a variety of events and known as the BMP, BPM, MBP or just Maserati Special. The car was entered for the Spring meeting at Shelsley Walsh in May and the beret-wearing Italian took four days to tow his car from Milan. Despite the handicap of a passenger he won his class. The car is illustrated on p. 64 of “The Shelsley Walsh Story” and appears to be a standard wire-wheeled Grand Prix car with a Maserati radiator cowl seamlessly grafted to the Bugatti bonnet. Later in the year he won the Coppa Ascoli and the next year at Coppa Valsassina. He died in 1998. (Other results :1933: DNF Tunis GP / DNF Bordino GP / DNF Tripoli GP / DNF Italian GP / 5 (heat) Monza GP. 1934: DNF Tripoli GP / 4 (heat) Biella GP / 8 Napels GP).

No, this is NOT the PBM (Premoli Bugatti Maserati) special. It is the MB Speziale of Clemente Biondetti, photo taken at the 1932 Targa Florio. Bugatti chassis number unknown, but the Maserati engine is #2519 delivered to Biondetti in March 1932.

Premoli had Maserati engine #3003, a 3 litre one, delivered in May 1932. It never had a 2.5 litre engine before. For 10 years now I am looking for a photo of the PBM, without success up to now. If somebody could post the photo from Shelsley Walsh here I would be very happy.

Quite by chance I discovered this question on The Bugatti Page about a Maserati engined Bugatti. I don't think this is the car you are refering to (the conversion seems to have been done in 1950's) but just in case, here goes.

Bugatti T37 with Maseratie engine 2
In Austria ( mid-50ies) a car raced under the Type T37'M', see picture. It has been announced in the racing programme as 1995 ccm, and as far as I know there also existed a 6-cylinder Maserati engine with 2 litres. There is nothing known about this car, neither a Chassis-Number nor what engine really has been installed. It also could be, that the 3 short sidepipes only have been decoration, as there are no black traces around and behind them.
Does anybody have any information on this car?

From the original entry form:
Josef Huber, Wien XIX , Fürfanggasse 1
Bugatti, Type Rennsport, M37, no info about year built, 8 cylinder, 1995 cc, bore 60 mm, stroke 88 mm, 2 carbs, engine no. 4059, chassis no. nil, no supercharger.

Josef Huber received r/n 5, but the car was refused by the technical scrutineers (for reasons I do not know).

No Maserati engine, but a typical 2 litre Bugatti unsupercharged one. If Huber mixed up engine number with chassis number (which afaik has also been stamped to the engines) the engine is from #4059, the T32 tank which had been sold to the Juneks.

No information about the chassis, can be anything, from T37 through Maserati to homebuilt special.

The above car is pictured on page 64 of The Shelsley Walsh Story by Simon Taylor - publisher, Haynes.

The picture was supplied by Matt Spitzley.

I am sure the Bugatti Trust must by now have this picture scanned in to their database.

The car looks absolutely identical to the one pictured at the Targa Florio except for the wheels (wire).
