I posted this, and a few others, before in another thread:

http://www.bugattibuilder.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=34

there were no reactions whatsoever, maybe because of the wrong thread?

Please add other cars!

This is a special built by Egon Bruetsch of Stuttgart (EBS), picture taken at the Schauinsland Hillclimb near Freiburg in 1949. Period report in "Motorsport + Motorradwelt" says that Brütsch's ESB Special is based on the von Morgen T51 #51139. After HJvM's fatal crash at the Nürburgring in 1932 the whereabout of this car is unknown (at least to me), but Egon Bruetsch participated in the first German postwar race event, the Ruhestein Hillclimb, with a Bugatti. Although I have a lot of photos from this event unfortunately nothing of Bruetsch.

Bruetsch was an interesting person. He was the owner (or heir) of a textile company making lady's stockings, an item which was highly demanded in the early postwar years. It is reported that his first special in 1948 he fully financed with stockings which changed hands on barter basis, for parts and labour. This car was even more interesting, it was built on a shortened truck chassis and driven by a 3.7 litre supercharged Maserati engine (most probably from Paul Pietsch's burnt-out 6CM-37).

THE P.J.S./BUGATTI

For three years Peter Stubberfield and friend P. J. Green have
been constructing this special Bugatti sprint motor. Lest readers
think that Peter goes in for furnishing his garage we must quickly
point out that the construction started in the morning room of his
house and then it was not convenient to move the work elsewhere.

As will be seen, the engine is a type 51 which has coil ignition
and a geared up blower and from which it is hoped to extract
180/200 B.H.P. The dry weight of the car will be about 10 cwt.,
so the acceleration should be quite something.

The chassis was specially constructed for the job and is on the
same principles as the well known H.A.R. All independent
suspension is used and employs wishbones and laminated torsion
bars.

The engine is coupled direct to an E.N.V. preselector gear box
from whence the drive passed over a short propeller shaft to a
transfer box with a choice of alternative ratios. The differential
housing (no Z.F. is employed as yet) is of alloy cast to form the
rear members of the chassis using Riley and E.R.A. parts.

Two leading shoe drum type brakes are used front and rear
with dual master cylinder.

An all alloy stressed skin body is employed with an integral
dashboard unit. Steering is by rack and pinion.

The photographs clearly show the pleasing lines of the car.
We shall look forward to its debut with great interest.

Dear All,

It is with great pride that I read about my great Uncle John (Peter Stubberfield) on this site!

The story of him building the car in the morning room, which then became the garage (much to my great aunt's disproval), eventually was turned in to John's study.

Regards
Sian
