| Post subject: | Car 4809 |
4809 A type 35 with a roller bearing crankshaft engine (no. 96). It was supplied on a factory invoice dated 23rd July, 1926 and delivered to Sorel in London on 31st, July, 1926. (Conway’s “Grand Prix Bugatti” states the car as delivered to agent “M.Campbell. London”). The first owner was Captain J.F.C. Kruse of Sunningdale, Berkshire and it was given the UK reg. no. YP 9453 carried on a very correct number plate mounted on the front dumb irons. The car was gifted to Amherst Villiers who had designed a 625cc auxiliary engine to drive a supercharger on his Rolls-Royce Phantom. It was driven by Villiers himself in sand racing on Southport beach and by his friend Raymond Mays who is pictured in “Grand Prix Bugatti” with the car at Skegness. The car was exported to Northern Ireland but the date when this took place is disputed. and in 1935 was re-registered in Belfast as CZ 9000 (this is a UK registration reflecting the political status of Northern Ireland). In the forties it was acquired by dentist C.G. “Charlie” Moore whose address ) in the mid-fifties was given in “The Bugatti Book” (p.38) as The Crescent, Drake Street, Rochdale, (Lancashire, UK).” Moore also owned the ex-Oliver Bertram type 35 and 4809 staued in his collection until 1986. Reference is made to the car having been “Raced in Ireland circa 1927-8 by Hugh McFerran. Ex-C. G. Neill, Ireland and D.C.Trowbridge.” Auctioned by Sothebys on 1st December, 1986 fitted with 16” wire wheels and in need of a rebuild. Sold to a telephone bidder in New York for £150,000 plus 10% buyers commission. The car then benefitted from a comprehensive refurbishment by Crosthwaite and Gardiner before a sejourn in the USA.It was repatriated to the UK by J. Proctor and listed in 2003 in the ownership of C.T.C.(Chris) Jacques, UK. UK reg. no. CZ 9000. |

Herewith a photo from the Wiki entry for 4809. (post C&G renovation I assume) 
Is this another matching numbers T35? Perhaps the contributors who do such yeoman work in keeping the Wiki updated can record this, if indeed it 4809 proves to be one of the few un-messed with racers? Thanks Johan PS. The 2 photos in my other post in Bugatti Personalities are also from Wiki. I tell you, that chassis number database is pure gold. |

I have Alexander Spottiswoode as owner in the 1st half of the 30's. The car was red then, which would fit to the Mays photo. 1936 he sold it to Hugh McFerran of Belfast, who re-painted it blue and raced it in Northern Ireland and Eire events. |
