Q&A: Bugatti’s Franz-Josef Paefgen

TDB: Let’s turn to Bugatti. You just introduced the Centenare, at the Geneva Motor Show, a limited edition of one.

Paefgen: This is the first step in celebrating 100 years of Bugatti, and it was proposed by a customer who is going to buy the car. We’ll have more later this year.

TDB: How much is he going to pay for Centenare?

Paefgen: I can only tell you the base price, $1.2 million.

TDB: There had been stories indicating we might see a less expensive Bugatti, in the future.

Paefgen: The simple story is that we will stay where we are, at the very top of the market. As soon as this car stops, we will build something else. We’re in the last 50 or so of the Veyron Coupe, then we have 150 (convertibles). Then we need to find something else to fill the plant. We’re currently running at the rate of 65 cars a year, so that means 2.5 to 3 years, at the latest.

TDB: We’ll start to show a proposal in September, when you’ll see four one-offs with the theme of racing history.

As I understood from interview with Paefgan, Bugatti will show more one-of-a-kind Veyrons later this year? There was interview where he told that we will se four unique Veyrons with the theme of racing history, I just wonder if there will be some engine upgrade.

Lot of speculation indeed. Basic message:

Bugatti SAS MIGHT show a new car (not a Veyron) in Franfurt this year.

Rumor: Top Speed

Bugatti may have some big plans for the long-rumored sedan, which include a first showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. 4WheelsNews is reporting the slow economy hasn’t stopped Bugatti from it’s sedan plans, but instead it actually may help Bugatti repeat history.

The new sedan is expected to be called the Royale and will possibly be limited to six units, just like the original. Ettore Bugatti intended to build twenty-five examples of his Type 41 (Royale), but the Great Depression limited production to less than one per year over the 1927 to 1933 run. So if this rumor is true, Bugatti may be once again introducing an ultra-exclusive sedan in a time when few will be able to afford it. The new Royale will likely borrow a version of the W16 engine from the Veyron, and it could be the world most expensive car considering the price should be well north of the Veyron’s $1.5 million retail price.

This kind of news always gets us excited, but we also have to be a little cautious. Earlier this year we were expecting something big from Bugatti at the Geneva Motor Show, and all we got was the Bleu Centenaire.

Interesting if there is even partly true. I guess it is another expression of wishfull thinking, same as 1350 HP Veyron. I would like to add also, that I will be happy if I am wrong. It will be just great if Bugatti will be able to create new model which would not dilute the brand and will stay at the very top of the automotive world.

Bugatti this month will reveal four special Veyron's . Four Racing Themes retrieved from Bugatti's history represented in four cars that represent four countries France(BLUE), Germany(White), Italy(RED, Great Britain(British Racing Green). Each one will be named after a Racing Driver from that Country.

We've seen one on Video.. all to bee seen later this month at Villa D'Este Concorso D'Elegance

Bugatti centenary celebrations
The illustrious, VW-owned marque will celebrate in style.

By Kevin Hackett

Bugatti will mark its 100th birthday with a celebration the factory is calling its “Centenaire”, which will result, at the end of this year, in an announcement regarding a future model.
Guy Caquelin, Bugatti’s market manager for Europe, told Motoring: “Soon the order books will be closed on the Veyron but what I can tell you is that there is a bright future for Bugatti beyond the production lifespan of that one car.”
So far 31 Veyrons have been sold to UK customers, making it a key market for the brand. As Bugatti’s historian, Julius Kruta explains, there’s a different approach to ownership here compared to other countries. “The Brits easily have the highest mileage Veyrons because they love to drive the things and it’s wonderful to see that appreciation of our engineering.”
