Supercars Run Short as Stars Go on Spree

July 2, 2007
By Staff Writers for Metro UK

The super-rich are prepared to spend it like Beckham for the ultimate bling statement – a fleet of supercars.

So 'essential' have they become that waiting lists have shot up and millionaires are prepared to pay vastly over the list price to queue-jump.

Celebrities including David Beckham, Eric Clapton and X Factor impresario Simon Cowell are credited with inspiring a dash for motors that can cost more than £1million.

Now City fatcats wanting to splash their record bonuses on an Aston Martin AMV8 are having to wait up to three years – or pay above the odds.

British-based financier Bob Manoukian dodged the waiting list for a Bugatti Veyron by paying £1.1million for one at a charity auction in May last year. This allowed him to jump the 18- month queue for the £760,000 car that does 253mph.

An unofficial 'grey market' has sprung up for the most desirable cars as only a handful are made.

Production of the Pagani Zonda that does 0-60mph in just 3.6 seconds was limited to just 25 and only 50 Porsche Carrera GTs rolled off the line.

Owning a Formula 1 car is the latest craze, according to a report for Virgin Money. Pop singer Peter Andre is one of 40 wealthy members of F1 Clienti which provides a pit crew to service privately owned racing cars at tracks.
