MINI TEST
That's what I call fast!
By Jenny Coad
Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Price as driven: £1.2million GOOD
One slinky brute — 1,001 horse power, industrial torque and a top speed of 253mph. It's the world's fastest convertible and most expensive car ever made. Yet it's surprisingly easy to drive. I take it for a stretch on a sunny afternoon in Slough with ex-racing driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel. And I break a record. Not for speed (I wish), but, I am told, for being the first female UK journalist to drive a Bugatti Veyron.
This car is pure pleasure, but then it should be at this price. It's comfortable, with soft Napa leather seats you can get in and out of with grace.
Record breaker: Jenny is the first female UK journalist to drive a Bugatti Veyron
Plenty of legroom for both passenger and driver. Visibility is excellent and the interior is light and spacious due to the panoramic roof.
Styling is pared down to a minimum with brushed steel controls, iPod slot and little else. Chic.
More...Car dosh: The £10,000 week-long vehicle 'spa' that leaves super-cars as good as new
Fast and loose with the law: Average Briton will break the speed limit 18,000 times over their life
It's automatic — of course — but to hear more from the engine, you can opt to change gear by a simple flick of the F1 style paddles.
The growl is pure thrill.
Designed to flourish at all speeds, from swanning about town to gunning it at full tilt (223 mph with the roof off).
Slough has speed cameras, sadly, but, when told to 'floor it', I do. And for a few seconds, I fly.
Plus points: Jenny discovered that there is plenty of legroom for both passenger and driver
Punchy. From O-60 mph in 2.7 seconds and 0-180mph in 13.7.
Swift to stop too: from 60mph to standstill in under 40 yards.
Pierre-Henri took the now soldout Super Sport to 268mph last month to reclaim the world record.
He thinks the Grand Sport personifies Beauty and the Beast. It's sinuous, with knockout power. He demonstrates the point. After navigating the potholes, he says: 'I'm going to accelerate, are you ready?' Perhaps not.
What a rush. I turn bright red. This is a common reaction among women, apparently. Men shake in response to the velocity.
Thankfully, Bugatti has made every effort to make this a safe car to drive — and you can tell. The four-wheel drive and chunky wheels grip the road firmly.
The structure has been modified to protect passengers from side impact or rolling. You will need hefty and specialist insurance. If I so much as graze the bonnet, repairs could cost £400,000. Ouch.
Turn off: Simon Cowell owns one (the Super Sport)
BAD
The price. In my dreams...
Not for wallflowers. It draws attention. People snap it, toot and BMWs make a point of tailgating. ?IF I was driving this all the time, I'd need the Duchess of Cambridge's hairdresser and a new wardrobe.
The boot in the bonnet is modest. Fits only a small weekend bag packed with precision.
Consumes a gallon in less than 8 miles in town; out of town does around 23 mpg. NOT for those with an environmental conscience: CO2 emissions of 596 g/km.
