Who can explain "old" in terms of metallurgy?

When it merely means a steel composition other than one that was not yet available in 1927, then it means little to nothing. Old steel plates in the proper thickness and size would be obtainable from ship demolishing sites, I suppose?

Indeed. Old sheet steel can be obtained. You do need to have access to a metallurgy lab, to be able to determine the composition. It would be quite stupid to select just that steel sheet that has been replaced on the ship in the 90's...

Also, to be 100% correct, you should be able to match the composition that was used on cars in that era.

Another relatively simple solution is to reshape a prewar truck chassis.
