HAWORTH, Alan Kershaw. An industrial glove manufacturer who was the long-term owner of assorted Bugattis and a close friend of fellow Lancastrian Jim Berry (see above). He was born on 26th January, 1920, the son of a Rochdale industrialist. He served an apprenticeship with Mather and Platt, a prestigious Lancashire industrial engineering firm and became their head draughtsman, aged twenty-one. He joined his family firm in 1947 and patented a method of covering cotton gloves with plastic. The success of the family business enabled him to indulge his interest in Bugattis which had been ignited by the sight of the type 55 of Dennis Ferranti commuting to work close to Mather and Platt. He purchased his first Bugatti during WW2, and his red 35C shortly thereafter. This car originally carried chassis no. 4899 but this was over-stamped as 4423 by the factory. The car had engine no. 159 and Its first recorded owner was Machesano but it passed through several hands before being imported into the UK by Jack Lemon Burton in 1938. It was given the UK reg. no. GNE 801 on 14th July, 1945. He used it at Prescott between June 1950 and June 1963 bringing his short course time down from 56.06 to 48.72 sec. His best time for the long course was set at 58.40 sec.on his last appearance in the car, this being the best time to date for a 35C. In the early post-war era he teamed-up with Berry (type 55) and Ted Robbins (type 51) to compete in hill-climbs all over the UK ; with great success. He also drove Jim Berry’s 35B. He was the eleventh private owner of a car 37326 with engine no. 237 and UK reg. no. YW 6844 which was delivered to the Paris showrooms in December, 1927, but passed through the hands of around fifteen UK owners before being acquired by Jardine around 1964. He also owned a 1928 type 43 (car 43154 with engine no. 44 and the 1937 UK reg. no. UJ 9511). In the early eighties he completed a red type 37 project which had an original chassis with no. 704* and a modified type 40 engine. It was issued with a UK BOC chassis plate with number 1011. He died on 16th December, 1988 after a short illness. His cars were sold at auction by Sothebys on 20th March, 1989. His 35C, which he had used since 1946, sold for £460,000 to Yorkshireman John Bentley and the “type 37” reached £180,000 thanks to its type 51 chassis. His touring car, a type 57C (57787 with engine C66, UK reg. no. FXC 66 and James Young fixed head coupé coachwork) sold for £300.000. As well as his Bugattis he also owned a Ford Special in the late fifties* and a smart green MG PB in the early seventies. He also owned a dinghy named Ebé. (Photos : see A/7/4 Jun.1989 p.61and photo. of type 37 in B.20/3/29. Obituary by Barrie Price B.51/4/6).

BENTLEY, C. John.

An engineer based in Town Street, Batley, West Yorkshire. In the late eighties he acquired the red, ex-Alan Haworth, type 35C (chassis no. 4423, engine no. 159 and UK reg. no. GNE 801). The car originally carried chassis no. 4899 but this was over-stamped as 4423 by the factory. It was imported into the UK from Italy in 1938 by Jack Lemon Burton. More recently, Bentley was responsible for the manufacture of a Bugatti Royale engine for the replica car built by Tom Wheatcroft. He was assisted by Keith Taylor. He is a Scott fanatic who has also owned several other very desirable vintage cars.

I unserstand that John Bentley sold the 35C. If you want to confirm this ring the England BOC registrar Mark Morris on 01242 673136 or 01777 702096.
