What could someone possibly do with it? It seems to me that the Bugatti is so well documented that selling it as another car would be impossible. Parting it out is a waist of time. How would someone explain where the parts came from? Aside from just keeping the car hidden away for years, could someone really get away with swiping a Bugatti? Thoughts? |

Strip it, grind away part numbers, and sell on the market, or fit to cars that miss those parts. Or "store it cold" and in a few years we will see another "barn find". Of course with changed chassis number. ---- Another question, very related: In the past, have other Bugattis been stolen, and what was their faith? I know of the Ghia-bodied type 50, but do not know its faith. Anyone? Jaap? Kees? |

A type 35 destined for a museum in the South of France and held in storage was reportedly stolen and nothing more was heard of it except that a senior member of the BOC claimed that parts from it had ended up in a built-up VSCC racer ! That claim was in fact nonsense. A well known UK BOC racer vociferously claims that several major components belonging to his late father were appropriated (a polite way of saying stolen) by a director of a UK restoration firm which had them in its possession. A now deceased UK owner claimed that a car which was being rebuilt had major components replaced by the restoration company who said that they had removed them because they were worn out or damaged in some way and they had thrown them away because it would have been unsafe to re-use them ! An out-of-court settlement was later made. The Bugatti-designed de Dietrich which was built-up by an official of the Bugatti Trust was stolen from a suburban driveway near London and, despite an alleged reported sighting in North Wales, has, to the best of my knowledge, never been seen again. |
