Hi DJ

Herewith some more information on the grey T57S roadster, a very good replica executed by Eric Koux, of which more anon. The original car was a T57S, chassis number 57385, with a roadster body designed by Jean Bugatti which at first had fully enclosed front wheels (photos 1 & 2) then changed a short time later to the more elegant front wings as shown in photos 3 & 4. Although Andre Derain, a painter, was not the first owner this car has become known, retrospectively, as the Derain Roadster.

In 1953 this car was re-bodied by Ghia (photo 5) and then it disappeared, although rumours persist that it survives somewhere in France.

Photos 6, 7 & 8 are of Eric Koux's inspired recreation. Already well known for his Atlantic recreations, this one's body was built by Rod Jolly in Britain and carries the number BC 116. All photos courtesy of Wiki.

Fabulous looking car.

Kind Regards
Johan Buchner

I have no doubt that the remains of 57385 will one day be discovered and rebuilt.

We will then have the "original" moving-mudguards car, a bad copy of it in America, and a quite-good copy of the car in its fixed-mudguard form.

Thanks Johan

Now i know wich car it is
altough i do have an article on the replica in the US i haven't seen that car there yet
nonetheless i really love how the first body looked like, the way the body encloses the front wheels, yet being detached from around the grill

Thanks DJ.

Like most people I prefer the later style front wings, but there is something fascinating about the details of those enclosed front wings. I don't know very much about the American replica of this first version, but I seem to remember there being some questions about the correctness of the rear end. Do you know more?

Regards
Johan

Well, of course everybody has his /her (how many women are on this forum?) taste, but the original car is much more balanced. The front with all functions separately visible (radiator, chassis, wheels, wheel covers, headlights) has a very special appeal, that the second version clearly lacks.

Of course the rebuild (and I saw the Koux replica) is a very pretty car, but it does not have that stunning appeal. More or less the same difference as between the bold agressive looks of the Atlantic compared with the more "friendly" S-Atalante.

So, I prefer the original, I'd even take the replica. Now I seem to remember that there were two, or was there only one which has been re-built?

I love Erics car but I feel that the front end lets it down badly. The area between the wings and radiator is sort of flat and boring ! There must be a compromise between the original stunning separate wings and the later style.

The Koux car has something else, when looking at it from the side it looks as if both ends were bent upwards, very strange. I doubt if this was the same with original.

so how many of those replica's are there now?
because there is that one in the US then taht was (is?) beige
off witch i have an article on from 1975
but now i spot in another article from 1992 a small picture of the same bodywork again but in very flamboyant RED!
& it says that pciture was taken at the last Retromobile in 1992
