Like many Bugatti owners, Dr. Chauvenet fought with the resistance after the invasion of France but was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp at Hinzert from 10th October 1942 until March, 1943. He survived the war and wrote a chilling account of the brutality he witnessed and survived : "..... All members of the SS, irrespective of service level and profession, were boorish, brutal and inherently hard; all this was strengthened by the firm will to become a type of ”Übermensch“ (superior human). All of them hated us, although one sensed something like jealousy stemming from their inferiority complex.’

An internet picture taken in 1950 show a good looking Dr. Chauvenet. Did he play any part in the post-war revival in the Bugatti movement ?

On the subject of war, it is worth reflecting on the role it played in the life of Ettore. It meant that he had no access to his factory for long periods of his life but on the other hand he did benefit financially from the design and production of aircraft and components. And of course, he was paid for his factory at the time of Trippel's takeover which enabled him and his family to live in some comfort during the war.
