Called in at Dutton's workshop on the way back from Molsheim today - Fabri's ex-Leopold type 59 was in for repairs to its back axle - damaged at Goodwood when another machine ran into it. How did the type 73 run ? It looks lovely. |

How did the type 73 run ? It looks lovely. It is not repeat not a T73  It is a type 73 C. Having got the engine sorted,and with the power quoted by Ettore,Tom Dark broke both half shafts at the recent Goodwood event.Having strenthened the back axle he realised that the gearbox would be the next problem,and it was! The mainshaft in the gearbox broke at a stress raiser for a circlip.Breaking at 45 degrees,the torque of the engine just pushed the rear gears out through the back of the gearbox.Fortunately the damage is confined to a small aluminum housing which for some reason has a speedo drive,unecessary on a GP but a legacy of the Le Mans T57 gearbox from which it is developed.Tom had used only top gear during practice because of his concern for the gearbox,and got 10th place i believe out of 17.During the race Tom decided to stick to 3 and top only.I believe however that the red mist descended at some point and to dispose of an ERA tom used 2nd gear.Never mind,the box will be repaired and stiffened up as required [ T59's suffer also from this problem ] The car is going very well indeed now.Almost all of the problems of the T73C are a legacy of the poor quality of the aluminium and steels available to Ettore during the war.Had the car been produced at Molsheim a couple of years earlier it could have been very sucessful.One to watch i feel.

Grazie Mille , Bugatti 91. I very much like the photo of the T73c leading the pack!  or are they trying to get past him? Could be a foretaste of things to come.

There was also this one wich was parked in the airfield space where they parked the WWII fighters
