Car at Autoworld is not Bugatti "55214" I supect it's not a Bugatti at all.

"Bugantics" Winter 1986 Hugh Conway Snr. said : "55214 has no doubt been broken up".

The car now listed in Bugatti Register as "55124" is a "bitza" concocted by St.John and Tula Engineering with a registration "borrowed" from car 55225 and many new major mechanical components. New bodywork. A nicely presented, but very unoriginal car.

Seems like the Tula Engineering Roadster 55214 might have SOME original components:

How did this one lose its body?

Quote from the page Richard Owen directs to (in case the page disappears)

Quote:
1932 BUGATTI TYPE 55 JEAN BUGATTI ROADSTER

Chassis Number 55214 was first delivered new in July 1932 by the Parisien Bugatti dealer Dominique Lamberjack. The original coachwork was a drophead coupe body fitted by Vanvooren.

After some time in the Lyon area of France, the Bugatti went to England just prior to WWII when it was purchased by Louis Giron and Guy Griffiths.

Post war the Bugatti joined the famous E.A.Stafford East collection and had it's engine replaced with a Type 44 unit. Stafford sold the car to H.H. 'Tom' Thomas (who owned no less than seven Type 55 cars). By 1978 the car had been acquired by Geoffrey St.John who fitted a Type 43 front axle from another T55 he owned. 55214 was sold to the current custodians in 1979.

In the mid 1980s, Tula Engineering carried out an exhaustive, no-expense spared rebuild and restoration of the car to full Jean Bugatti Roadster configuration. The engine crankcase and cylinder block are new, while the cam boxes and supercharger are original Bugatti components. The bulkhead is original, so too is the bonnet. The gearbox is an original Type 55 unit as is the fuel tank, the shock absorbers and the propshaft.

This beautifully presented car is fully accepted by the Bugatti Owner's Club (UK) and is of course highly eligible for the many international rallies.

Frame Number: 31, known to be originally fitted to this car 55214.

Original Type 55 radiator.

Type 43 front axle beam (un-numbered).

Original supercharger and camboxes.

Original bulkhead.

Original Type 55 gearbox casing (numbered 17) and lid (number 43).

Original propshaft.

Replacement rear axle centre casing, stamped with factory Code Number 655 with original tubes and backplates.

An original fuel tank.

Original shock absorbers.

Original bonnet with reproduction Jean Bugatti coachwork.

A Type 55 Bugatti ranks as one of the most desireable of all pre-war cars.

(Our thanks to David Sewell for his help researching the history for this car.)

according to a friend that checked the license plates the s/n on these cars should be:

T37 GP d'Ieteren (unknown) OAG-497 (B) SR037

T43 R GS 1936 (unknown) OAY-469 (B) 43273

can these be confirmed?

Unknown type 37 - presumably this is 037 SR - this being the 37th chassis frame made by Alan Wragg of Sherwood Restorations at Blidworth, Nottinghamshire during the seventies and eighties.
