Bugatti Veyron scoops double ‘car of the decade’ award

London/ Los Angeles, February 2010 - The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 and its ‘brother’, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, has been announced as Car of the Decade by two of the world’s most respected automotive media.

BBC Television’s Top Gear presenters, led by Jeremy Clarkson, announced at the beginning of this year that, “It was a car that rewrote the rule book, an amazing piece of engineering, a genuine Concorde moment… the Top Gear Car of the Decade is the Bugatti Veyron.”

The Robb Report, a leading US journal on luxury brands, also confirmed today that the open-top version, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, had established an entirely new precedent as ‘Car of the Decade’. It earned uniform praise from the judges who praised it for fulfilling Bugatti’s mission “to celebrate, unapologetically, beauty and power.”

Both Top Gear Television and the Robb Report affirmed that the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 and the Grand Sport defied all categorisation, thus deserving their own distinct honour and place in history.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4, first launched in the middle of the last decade, has a top speed of 253mph (407 km/h) reaching 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 2.5 seconds. With a price of €1.2 million (excluding tax) only 300 units will be made. Available from July 2009, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport has a top speed of 253mph (407 km/h) reaching 0-62mph (0 100km/h) in 2.7 seconds with a price tag of € 1.4 million (excluding tax).

Dr. Stefan Brungs named Head of Sales and Marketing for Bugatti

Molsheim, September 1, 2010 – Bugatti Automobiles SAS announced today that Dr. Stefan Brungs (50) will take over the sales, marketing and aftersales department for the company, beginning October 1. Brungs will succeed Alasdair Moray Stewart (46) who effective immediately will join Bentley Motors Limited as sales and marketing director in the board of executives.

Stefan Brungs started his career in the Volkswagen Group as head of the marketing strategy and conception of the Volkswagen brand and in 1997, took over the sales for the Northwest region of Europe. From 1999 to 2004 Brungs ran Bentley‘s European business as its managing director. During this time, Bentley successfully launched the Continental GT, expanding the brand to a new customer demographic.

Shortly after the Continental GT’s successful launch, Brungs was appointed to run the Volkswagen’s multibrand sales. Super Sport press drives in Spain

Bugatti presents Super Sport to international media

Molsheim/Jerez de la Frontera in October 2010 – Only a few weeks ago the new Veyron 16.4
Super Sport achieved a new land speed world record with 431, 072 km/h (268 mph) on
Volkswagen Group’s proving ground at Ehra-Lessien nearby the Wolfsburg headquarters. In
August, Bugatti presented the car in California for the very first time to the public and now the company has invited a selective group of media to drive the Super Sport.
Through Andalusia’s beautifully landscaped fields, green mountains and lonely roads, Bugatti offered the media a wide variety to test-drive the Super Sport’s acceleration, braking system and handling. For three weeks Bugatti’s world record driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel and Bugatti’s longtime test-driver Loris Bicocchi will introduce two journalists per day to this extraordinary vehicle.

The climax of the Veyron series: the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

Had a model been especially popular or highly successful in races, Ettore Bugatti’s customers often pushed the master to tease out of the engine a few horsepower more for their future car. Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. had been in a similar situation when their existing customers asked the company to not only design their second model optically differently but to also create a version with a sportier and more extreme driving experience. The result is a car with a uniquely high performance of 1,200- hp (882 kW) offering experienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a maximum torque of 1,500 Newton metres and a limited top speed of 415 km/h (to protect the tyres) but, the technique of the Super Sport is identical to the record car. The first five Super Sports to come off the production line will constitute a special series of their own, with the same configuration as the landspeed record car.

The Super Sport is a consequent of the further development of the classic exclusive 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4, launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in bends and excellent stability when braking and accelerating.
Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead to constantly new conclusions, which enabled the engineers at Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a direction in which the driver can reach new dimensions. Every modification is designed to produce an even more powerful car for an agile ride.
Four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers have been used to boost the power of the
16-cylinder engine, and the chassis has been extensively redesigned to maintain safety at extreme speed – thanks to slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers, and new shock absorbers with a complex architecture originally developed for racing cars. This gives noticeably more precise control of the wheels and the car as a whole. With lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 G and improved interaction between the tyres and the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super Sport offers perfect handling and even more powerful acceleration of 1,500 Newton metres on corner exits.
The body has been fine-tuned to improve aerodynamic efficiency and maintain perfect balance in every situation, while the new fibre structure of the all-carbon monocoque ensures maximum torsion rigidity and passive safety – at reduced weight. The skin is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites, and the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is available in 100 per-cent clearlacquered exposed carbon on request.

Dynamic exterior

Every detail of this car, and not just its use of advanced motorsport technology, harks back to the pioneering spirit of company founder Ettore Bugatti. This brilliant designer came from a family of artists, and his philosophy was always to combine mechanical perfection and exterior beauty. This ethos remains alive and well at the company, and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is wholly unmistakeable, with every external modification serving to coax greater performance from the car.
The Super Sport’s flat, elongated silhouette is immediately recognisable. The 16-cylinder engine gets its air from two NACA ducts integrated into the roof, rather than from scoops above the engine.
The front air intakes have been expanded and reshaped, with the lower one extending elegantly around the sides to the wheel arch. The revised back looks sportier due to the double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system.
Bugatti has a tradition of making super-sport versions of successful models, usually with racing chassis and supercharged engines. These cars were considered as true racing machines for diehard Bugatti devotees. The most successful were the type 55 and type 57S; only around forty of each were built.
The Super Sport will begin production this autumn at Molsheim along with the Veyron and the Grand Sport. The first five cars – known as the World Record Edition – are in a special black exposed carbon and orange finish and have already been sold.

Bugatti takes part in Qatar Motor Show for first time

Doha, Qatar, 26 January, 2011 – France’s legendary automotive marque, Bugatti, is presenting the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport – the world’s fastest, most powerful and most exclusive open-top car – at the Qatar Motor Show.

Developing the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport presented the marque renowned for impeccable automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics with a whole new set of challenges.

Significant modifications to the vehicle’s complex structure were needed to enable open-top driving. Incorporating a host of new and innovative safety and equipment features, the world’s fastest and most exciting roadster is even greater than before. It is immediately recognizable by its slightly higher windscreen, stylized daylights and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof.
The main challenge when developing the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with its removable hard-top roof resulted from the unique structure of the Veyron. An optimum combination of rigidity and lightweight engineering ensured an extremely strong but very lightweight passenger cell.
As the roof was an integral part of the vehicle’s structure, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle’s rigidity and safety during crashes – and the car needed to offer additional protection from side impacts and rolling. As a result, the monocoque structure was reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel.
The doors of the Grand Sport are made of carbon fibre, and house an integrated longitudinal beam.
In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B-pillar, thereby dissipating impact energy. Furthermore, the two redesigned air intakes for the 16-cylinder mid-engine now feature 10-centimetre-wide carbon-fibre elements to offer protection in the event of a roll.
The panorama roof gives both the driver and passenger a comprehensive all-round view and creates the impression of a spacious interior. In warmer climates, the polycarbonate roof offers protection against solar radiation.
When the roof is on, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach a top speed of 407 km/h, while speeds of up to 360 km/h are possible with the roof off. Should it rain, an innovative soft-top roof, like an umbrella, stored in the luggage compartment, can be opened up easily at any time. When this soft-top roof is on, the car can travel at up to 160 km/h.
The interior features moisture-resistant backstitched leather and a range of new equipment, including a reversing camera with a 2.7-inch monitor integrated in the rear-view-mirror, and a
“Puccini” sound system with digital signal processor, especially developed for open-top driving.

More than just an open-top Veyron

“When I had the chance to test-drive the new Grand Sport for the first time, I was filled with excitement,” said Pierre-Henri Raphanel, Bugatti’s pilote officiel, “as soon as I shifted into second gear, I immediately knew this was a completely different car. Even with the roof on, the driving experience was more intense – I could feel it in my fingertips and at the base of my spine. The car was more precise with less understeer, almost as if you had taken some filters away from the suspension and the steering.” The former Le Mans winner has probably driven more kilometres in a Veyron than anyone else, presenting the car to numerous customers and the press. “I never imagined that the driving experience could be improved so much,” he said. When the roof is off, the sound of the engine, mixed with the sound of the road and the wind, creates more excitement and gives the driver the unique cabriolet feeling. “And when you hear the air intakes sucking heavily with a slurping sound behind your neck, you think you’re about to be launched out of the car!” he laughs.

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport 16.4 will be assembled by hand at the company’s headquarters in Molsheim, France over the next few years. The standard version costs 1.4 million euros (excluding taxes and delivery). Bugatti offers many ways to customize it.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport awarded Top Gear’s Car of the Year

London/Molsheim, January 27, 2011

At the annual award ceremony in a London restaurant Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond presented the Top Gear Awards 2010. The third of the presenting team, James May, who actually picked the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Super Sport as his “Car of the Year”, was tied up in a filming session in the United States. The statue was received by Pierre Henri Raphanel, Bugatti’s Pilote Officiel and the driver of the Super Sport’s land-speed record of 431 km/h in June 2010.
James May’s drive
On the same day as Bugatti made its own successful challenge to claim the world production car land-speed record a tense James May fastened himself into the ultimate version of the Bugatti Veyron, the Super Sport, in order to make a personal attempt at breaking his own land-speed record, at the proving grounds of Volkswagen Group’s Ehra-Lessien track.

Admitting to being nervous at the thought of surpassing all speed limits he’d experienced so far, James May soon passed his own record reaching a staggering 417km/h (259.11 mph) whilst commenting on the stability and performance of the car.
Aired in series 15 of the popular TV show Top Gear, James’ drive is still available on the website and was featured in Top Gear Magazine, revealing that ‘Captain Slow’ was, once again, “not so slow”. His unique experience of the Bugatti Super Sport’s performance led James May to proclaim it his personal Car of the Year 2010.

Super Sport almost sold out

The Super Sport is a result of the further development of the classic exclusive 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4, launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in bends and excellent stability when braking and accelerating. Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead constantly to new conclusions, which enabled the engineers at Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a direction in which the driver can reach new dimensions.
Every modification is designed to produce an even more powerful car for an agile ride. The result is a car with a uniquely high performance of 1,200-hp (882 kW) offering experienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a maximum torque of 1,500 Newton metres and a limited top speed of 415 km/h (limited only to protect the tyres) but, the technical specification of the Super Sport is identical to the record car.

With 38 Super Sports already ordered, the Super Sport is almost sold out.

New hands on the wheel at Bugatti

Three unique Bugattis on display at the Geneva Motor Show
Geneva/Molsheim, February 28, 2011 – on the evening before the Geneva Motor Show, the outgoing and incoming presidents of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. arrived at the Volkswagen

Group Evening in a Bugatti Atalante – one of the rarest and most expensive cars ever made – to finalize their regime change in front of an audience of 500 journalists. The new appointee, Wolfgang Dürheimer, praised departing Chief Executive Officer Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen on everything he had achieved for the Bugatti brand.
Head of Technical Development since 2003 and CEO of Bugatti Automobiles since 2007, Dr. Paefgen has played a crucial role in positioning the brand and in the success of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. At the brand's centenary celebrations in 2009, Dr. Paefgen revealed a glimpse of what the future might hold by presenting a concept for a four-door 16 C Galibier.
“Developing the Bugatti Veyron was one of the biggest engineering challenges I have ever faced,” said Paefgen. “Constructing an engine with over 1,000 hp was only the start. We had to redesign every component from scratch: the gearbox, the input shafts, the tires, the brakes and the passenger cell – and everything had to be as light as possible, so we used materials such as titanium, magnesium, aluminum and carbon fiber. The whole Bugatti team really did an extraordinarily fine job.”
“Franz-Josef Paefgen led a team that created truly unmatched automobiles in the form of the Veyron, the Grand Sport and the Super Sport – sports cars which are still far ahead of their time in terms of both design and technology,” said Dürheimer. “Paefgen has succeeded in breathing new life into the Bugatti brand. The acceleration alone, from 0 to 300 km/h in 14.6 seconds, speaks for itself.
You have to remember that six years ago, when the Veyron came onto the market, many commentators were dubious as to whether Bugatti would succeed at all in reviving the brand. It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to continue building this exceptional brand and playing a role in shaping its future direction.”
Focus on the Grand Sport
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is currently the fastest, most powerful and most exclusive convertible in the world. The Grand Sport gives drivers the combined pleasures of sun, wind and speed. The thunderous roar of the 16-cylinder mid-mounted engine surrounds you, the acceleration is akin to lift-off, and the spectacular gulping suction from the air intakes leaves you feeling like you are being lifted out of your seat.
When developing the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, it was necessary to make significant modifications to the Grand Sport's complex structure in order to make open-top driving safe and enjoyable. The removable glass roof presented new challenges, even for a brand which has always upheld the highest standards in automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics. Extremely strong yet lightweight, the carbon-fiber monocoque passenger shell is a central element of the vehicle's structure. As the roof is an integral part of this, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle's rigidity and crash safety and to offer the same protection from side impacts and rolling. As a result, the Grand Sport's monocoque was reinforced around the side skirts and the central tunnel. The doors are made of carbon fiber and house an integrated longitudinal beam. In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B pillar. Additionally, the two redesigned air intakes now feature 10-centimeter wide carbon-fiber elements to offer protection if and when the car rolls.
Fitted with a host of innovative safety systems and new equipment features, the fastest street-legal sports car in the world can now be experienced as both a convertible and a coupé with a panoramic polycarbonate roof. The result is an automobile which can be customized and tailored to suit almost any imaginable requirement.
The two special-edition Grand Sports on display at the Geneva Motor Show are presented in a twotone horizontal colour split. The first one is resplendent in visible blue carbon, framed in polished aluminum. This striking contrast extends from the wheels to the interior. The console is of the same exposed blue carbon and the dashboard, steering wheel and gear lever are encased in blue leather with silver stitching, while the seats are finished in silver-colored leather with blue stitched seams.
This special edition has a price tag of 1.75 million euros (2.4 million US dollars) and has already been sold.
The second special edition on display is a Grand Sport in matte white, with matte-white tinted air intakes, surrounded by clear-lacquered blue carbon elements, including blue-tinted wheels. The interior of this car is also dominated by blue tones, forming a dramatic backdrop to the white stitching on the seats, steering wheel, gear lever and aluminum console. It comes at a price of 1.6 million euros (2.2 million US dollars) and it too has already been sold.
Super Sport makes its motor show debut
The third model exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show is a Super Sport. It has the same black and orange finish as the World Record Edition models, but the style is completely different. This time, the exterior is matte and high-gloss black, while the interior is finished with tangerine leather throughout. Only the door panels, dashboard, steering wheel and console are covered in black leather or exposed carbon. This Super Sport edition has an impressive price tag of 1.9 million euros (2.6 million US dollars) and has also already been sold.

Bugatti displays new models at Auto Shanghai
Fastest production car in the world premieres in Asia
Special Grand Sport for the Auto Shanghai 2011
Molsheim/Shanghai, 19 April 2011 – Bugatti creates top-rate performing sports cars that are so unique in design and technique that they have been named pieces of art. The two latest masterpieces by this legendary European manufacturer will be on display at the Auto Shanghai 2011, an Asian debut for the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. The Super Sport ranks as the highest performing car in existence with 882 kW (1,200 PS) and an electronically limited top speed of 415 km/h. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, whose 736 kW (1,001 PS) makes it the most powerful convertible in the world, will also be showcased by the Alsace-based luxury brand in Shanghai. But today‘s Bugattis are more than the ultimate sports cars – the Veyron 16.4 has already become an exclusive collector‘s item and a prized investment.
A special edition Grand Sport for the Auto Shanghai 2011
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will be unveiled in Shanghai is finished in matte white, with the same tone on the roof‘s prominent air intakes. Blue carbon elements on the vehicle‘s lower section and blue finished alloy wheels in form a striking contrast. The blue color also dominates the super car’s interior, set off to perfection by white stitching on seats, steering wheel and gear lever and an aluminum console. This vehicle has been specially built by the Bugatti customization team to its destined owner‘s exact specifications
“This Grand Sport is an example of the versatile possibilities customers have when designing their unique Grand Sport in co-operation with the Bugatti team”, explained the President of Bugatti Wolfgang Dürheimer at the Auto Shanghai. “We will continue to expand the design possibilities for the Bugatti brand.”
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is the most powerful and fastest convertible in the world today. Just the three telling figures 736 kW (1,001 PS), 1,250 Nm torque and a top speed of 407 km/h (limited) make it clear that amongst convertibles this car is truly in a league of its own. When opened to the skies, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport reaches top speeds of 360 km/h leaving other convertibles standing in its dust.
Accompanying the sheer thrill of driving with the top down is a quite extraordinary sonorous roar that no other automobile can match. The sounds of the 16-cylinder mid-mounted engine and the unmistakably intense inhalation from the air intakes as you release the accelerator forge an inimitable acoustic experience.
And should rain clouds appear, a textile canopy that is stowed in the trunk and functions in the same way as an umbrella can be fitted before the first drops fall. This soft top for passing showers remains securely in place up to 160 km/h. But with the transparent polycarbonate roof module back in place, the Grand Sport goes right on accelerating all the way to 407 km/h.
A Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport for China
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport presented in Shanghai comes completely in black visible carbon carbon. The details in the polished and anodized aluminum set an excellent contrast as the outer surfaces of the alloy wheels and the EB logos on wheel caps, fuel filler cap and rear lid. The interior of the Super Sport is draped in two-tone “Snow Beige” and “Beluga Black”. Carbon continues as a defining theme in the inside, sheathing the doors and inset in the central console. The rest is in highly exclusive “Snow Beige” leather. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport shown in Shanghai has already been sold to a customer in China.
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is the fastest car worldwide
The Super Sport is based on the classic Veyron 16.4 but with an output of 882 kW (1,200 PS) is 146 kW (200 PS) more powerful. Bugatti pilote officiel Pierre-Henri Raphanel last year set a new world speed record for production vehicles on the Volkswagen test track in Ehra Lessien, achieving 431 km/h and an entry into the Guinness Book of Records. The production version is electronically limited to 415 km/h to protect the tires.
The power development of the 7,993 cm3 capacity 16-cylinder engine is made possible by the four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers. The chassis has also been extensively redesigned, in order to handle the car‘s extreme dynamism with safety. With lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 g, the improved interaction between the tyres and the intelligent all-wheel drive system enables perfect handling. At the same time all powertrain components have also been comprehensively reinforced, to transfer the acceleration of up to 1,500 Nm safely to all four drive wheels.
Instead of the air intakes above the engine, fresh air is fed in via two NACA ducts set into the roof. The Super Sport‘s front view is characterized by expanded, reshaped air intakes, with the lower one extending around the sides to the wheel arch to lend this supreme sports car an even more assured appearance. Meanwhile at the rear the Super Sport features a revised rear panel arrangement and engine cover, a new double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system with two broad chrome exhaust tips. The modified rear and the redesigned roof both enhance the aerodynamics of this quintessential Bugatti.
Ettore Bugatti built the most fascinating cars of all time
The mystique of Bugatti came into being in the first half of the last century. Ettore Bugatti and later his son Jean designed vehicles which were far ahead of their time in styling and technology. Types such as the T 57 SC Atlantic or the many versions of the T 41 Royale were then, and still are, legends, and some of the most valuable automobiles ever made. But the mystique is not founded solely on those coupés, roadsters, convertibles and saloons which were driven by the beau monde of the 1920s and 1930s – it is also rooted in the racing victories of those decades.
Test driver Pierre Veyron, who between 1933 and 1937 raced at the wheel of a Bugatti 51A, earned perhaps the most renown for the marque. In this eight-cylinder compressor racer, which developed an output of 140 PS from a cubic capacity of 1,4933 and reached an epoch-making top speed of 210 km/h, Veyron and his team mates set nine international land speed records at the Montlhery circuit outside Paris. And it is in homage to this man that the first Bugatti of the modern era bears his name. Through his racing career Pierre Veyron established forever the legendary status of an automobile marque and a designer of genius: Ettore Bugatti, or simply EB.
