Maybe try a respray in black / red?

At the auction in 2009, the same car remained unsold also, though at a higher price of $4.4M, almost enough for the estimate now of €3.250.000.

perhaps one should have considered better the original state with the restoration

In those days restaurations were without intention to bring the car back to original state.

Just the colors and details as the owner wished.

That may lead to some odd color choices, but of course, it's the owner's choice to make the car as he wishes!

quite right you are. It was the circle around william harrah, who" invented" the restoration term "better than new".
but keep in mind the wonderfull colour taste of the americans, just the best on the brewster cars........

the taste of the Americans does not please everyone, otherwise the car would be already sold ...

I doubt it is the colour of the car that makes it not sell.

I like the red and black colour combo, but also the yellow/black version. I I hade that kind of money to spend, I am sure I could find a cheap polish painter that could respray it.

I guess when this particular car was "restored" (~ 1970??), they really didn't know exactly what it originally looked like. I've seen photos of it pre-Harrah and some period modifications were brought back to original, while others were not. The rear end with those fins definately was there already before Harrah got it. The front wings seem to have been replaced and don't look quite right.

although harrah was one of the founders of the "better than new" collectors, he always did a lot of research when restoring cars, trying to have them back to original condition (not preserverved)

True. That's why I think they got a bit confused as to how that car looked like when it left Molsheim, as some period body changes were brought back to original, but as we all know today it still doesn't look quite right.

IMO Harrah's folks did a great job on the restaurations of most of the collector cars considering the time and the colour schemes were quite tasteful most of the time. The Atalante is an exception I'd say.
