Post subject:  FLOWER, Raymond.

There has been some discussion about Lord Raglan working in Cairo in 1955 as an aerodynamacist.

It does sound rather bizarre. A young aristocratic graduate from agricultural college working as a racing car designer ???

Suprise, suprise - it's true.

Some people say that the project leader, Raymond Flower, who was an expert on Egyptian politics, was planted in Cairo to keep an eye on a local politician who was threatening to nationalise the Suez canal.

I believe Flower is still alive and well - do any forum members know him ?

The Phoenix car was entered for Le Mans painted in a fetching shade of pale Violet, the national racing colour of Egypt. The bodywork FitzRoy had worked on looks absolutely ravishing, even in black and white. There's a good picture of the car in Mike Lawrence's definitive directory of Sports Cars.

Driven by Flower and Mike Llewellyn in practice, but, it is said, sabotaged by the French secret service (remember how they sank a Greenpeace ship) the night before the race.

I don't know the intended subject of FitzRoy's lecture at the Bugatti Trust but a few words about his sojourn in Cairo would be of great interest.

Are non-members of the Trust allowed to attend ?
