I would like to learn more about Mme. Anna Rose-Itier. I have found some biographical information below. Besides this information, does anyone have any other stories, or information on her, especially as it relates to Type 37's? Mr. Pierre Yves Laugier has found a picture of her sitting in my car, 37265, in 1928, so I am trying to learn more about her, and see, especially, if anyone has any older pictures of her and the cars she raced?

Mme. Anne Cécile Rose-Itier (F)
1895 - ?
The chauvinistic drivers of the period nicknamed her a "moving chicane" but she was known as a distinguished, charming and very pretty woman. By the way, note the results list below. Not many retirements to be found there! Married to a Mr. Rose, a Scotsman, she raced also under the full name of Anne-Cécile Rose-Itier. After flying aeroplanes, she turned to automobile racing in 1926 either because of her free and independent spirit or possibly as an escape from an unhappy marriage with domestic violence. For three years she limited herself to rallyes and some hillclimb, graduating to cyclecar racing. From 1931 to 1936 she raced Bugattis T37, T37A and T51A and a T46 sport. She won the Voiturette races at Nimes in 1932 and Peronne in 1933, and enter some international GPs but being more successful in hill-climbs. In 1935 she and Bugatti driver Jean Delorme founded the USA (Union Sportive Automobile), grouping independent drivers that did not find that the established French Drivers Association (the AGACI) was fit for their necessities. She raced at Le Mans 24hrs a (female) record five times, from 1935 to 1939. In 1937 she was partnered by Huschke von Hanstein and romance blossomed between the two. The same year she left GP racing; lost in the desert during the Rallye of Morocco, she was romantically rescued by von Hanstein. A third in the 1938 Paris 12 hrs partnered by Germaine Rouault, and a participation in the 1939 Monte Carlo Rallye closed her prewar activity. During the war she did voluntary work for the War Ministry and then she continued as president of the USA, working on an ambitious program of popularization of the sport in France, not retiring until the 60s. She limited her racing mainly to the Monte Carlo Rallye that she entered until 1953.

ANNE-CECILE ROSE-ITIER
Born 0/0/1895 115 years ago.
Died Date of passing unknown

In a career spanning over twenty-five years, "Madame Itier" proved a lot of people wrong. After successfully leaving a bad marriage she began racing in 1926. Her first event was the Paris-Pau road race, driving a Brasier. For the rest of the Twenties she concentrated mainly on rallying and hillclimbs. She won the La Mothe-Sainte-Heraye hillclimb outright in 1928, an achievement she would repeat in 1932. 1928 also saw her on track for the Grand Prix Feminin at Montlhery, a prestigious ladies' race.
At the turn of the decade she came back to the circuits and competed in Cyclecar races, the smallest major racing class. These tiny vehicles were quick and the races were dangerous and very competitive. Anne-Cecile equipped herself with a Rally SCAP, in which she scored some good results. She was fifth in the Bordeaux Grand Prix in 1929 and third in the Oranie GP the following year.
Between 1931 and 1936, Madame Itier made a name for herself racing Bugattis, mainly in the smaller Voiturette class. At first she was disparagingly referred to as a "mobile chicane" by her peers, but she soon had them eating their words. In her first year in the Bugatti T37 she was seventh in the Tunisia GP, fourth at the Circuit du Dauphine and third at the Marne GP. The following year, she earnt her first win in the Trophee de Provence, improved her Tunisia finishing record to fifth and came fourth at Casablanca.
She kept up her winning ways in 1933 with a victory in the Picardie GP, still in the T37. She was also fourth at France's Albi track and fifth in the Lemburg GP in Poland.
A switch to a Bugatti T51 brought mixed fortunes in 1934. Anne-Cecile won the Phare hillclimb outright and was third in the Picardie GP, but only managed eighth in the Eifelrennen at the Nurburgring and ninth in the Swiss Berne GP, although these were big races and she was nowhere near the back. For the following year she raced a Fiat Balilla as well, mainly in sportscar events. She failed to finish the Marne GP but came eighteenth on her second outing at Le Mans, driving alongside Robert Jacob.
Madame Itier was a fixture at Le Mans from 1934 to 1938. Her first race was in an MG Midget P; she and Charles Duruy were seventeeth. In 1937 she made history by racing the first fully-closed GT car at the legendary track, the futuristic-looking Adler Trumpf. It proved a little too ahead of its time and failed to finish. Her best finish was twelfth in 1938, driving an MG Midget Special with Bonneau.
Towards the end of the decade, she moved back to rallying, although good results in sportscars still came her way. She and Germaine Rouault were third in the Paris 12 Hours in 1938, driving a Delahaye. Anne-Cecile sometimes co-drove for Kay Petre in her Austin and often rallied with German driver Huschke von Hanstein. The pair met when Madame Itier was lost in the dust on the Moroccan rally and von Hanstein rescued her. It was in his Hanomag Diesel that she finished her last pre-war event, the 1939 Monte Carlo rally.
During the war, she showed as much strength and bravery as she did on the track, helping to evacuate children from occupied France. When peace returned to Europe, her hunger for competition was undiminished. After a couple of unsuccessful sportscar outings in the aging Fiat Balilla she turned full-time to rallying in a Renault 4CV. For her first event, the 1948 Monte Carlo Rally, she was co-driven by fellow Thirties race starlet Madame Helle-Nice. They crashed out. Anne-Cecile was undeterred and returned to the Alpes Maritimes every year until 1953, when she hung up her helmet for good aged fifty-eight.
That was not the end for Madame Itier. She was involved in French motorsport administration until the Sixties, mainly with the association for independent drivers which she and Jean Delorme formed in 1935.

A bit more information.

ITIER, Anne-Rose.

The French driver of Bugattis in numerous speed events frequently wearing her trademark pink overalls. In March 1933, when she was living in Cap-Breton she purchased a type 51 with chassis no. 51142 and engine no. 3/1500. She competed with it in the one-and-only city centre Grand Prix de Vichy on 15th July, 1934 and finished sixth in the first heat which failed to get her into the final which was dominated by Alfa Romeos and Maseratis. The type 51 was no longer competitive. She is famously pictured in a Robert Fellowes photograph taken in 1935 at the Picardy Grand Prix driving the car past an apparently unpeturbed police horse (see “Bugantics" 38/1/8). She raced at Le Mans in 1937 driving an Adler in the same team as Porsche guru Huschke von Hanstein. She is pictured in his biography*and described as a “French amazon”. She encouraged Hellé-Nice to participate in the 1949 Monte Carlo Rally.* “HVH The Racing Baron by Tobias Aichele” ISBN 3-8290-3320-6.

With reference to Andrew's posting I would be interested in more information about the type 46 she used. When I was a schoolkid I "helped-out" at Bill Bloomfield's Cheltenham garage. He made his 46 go quite quickly. His son Simon still lives near Prescott and has inherited the car after his mother's death. Unfortunately it now needs a complete engine rebuild.

I am able to confirm this information from Mr. Pierre Yves Laugier:

Madame Anne ROSE –ITIER(1890-1980)

Type 37 (Chassis 37265) #30 Montrepos Hill Climb 2 June 1929 Anne Cecile Rose-Itier, 2nd Place

It is well possible that in 1929, at the time of the pictures of 37265 with Rose-Itier were taken, she was using that car for other hill-climbs and flying starts.

According to PYL, "The second place of Anne Rose-Itier, certainly with 37265, in June 1929, is probably her first good result in a Bugatti."

"Anna Itier was not an obscure driver but the most successfull woman driving Bugattis...from 1928 to 1936."

"She will drive a Type 37A (chassis 37365), in 1931-1932, then a Type 51A (chassis 51142), from 1933 to 1936."

I will post pictures of Anne Itier, that I have, in 37265 shortly.

Would anyone else have any other pictures or information of Anne Cecile Rose-Itier in other hillclimbs or races, and in particular between 1928 to 1931?

Note: both pictures above from GP Picardie May 1935 have different race numbers, so it is likely one of these might be from a different race (but the info I received with each pic had this info.) [If anyone has corrections for this please list.]

Based on the race information above, maybe the picture with #8 is from Picardie 1937:

T51 GP ()#28 XI Grand Prix de Picardie, 26 may 1935, Anne Cécile Itier, 6th
T51A GP ()#8 XIII Grand Prix de Picardie, 27 Jun 1937, Anne Cécile Itier, NC

And the picture with #16 above is from:

T51A GP (51142 ex 4827),#16 XII Grand Prix de Picardie, 21 Jun 1936, Anne Cécile Itier, DNQ

I posted the pics of Rose-Itier in 37265, as she was a driver of 37265, even though it was 51142. It should probably also be posted to 51142.

I have additional events to add to Mme Rose-Itier's History:

T37 GP (?) San Sebastian, Sports Car Category, 29 July 1928, Anne Cecile Rose-Itier
T37 GP (?) Constantine Hill Climb, 1930, Anne Cecile Rose-Itier

Also, there is an article on Anne Rose-Itier (that I have no scanner for yet) in Pur Sang, Vol. 42, No. 2, Spring 2002, pages 16-21 that has numerous pictures and event information listed. If anyone has this article and can scan it, that would be great!

I just heard from Copperkettle, and he confirms that this pic is of Mme Rose-Itier in the May 1935 GP de Picardie, and she wore #8.

Unfortunately, this contradicts the previous info that says she wore #28 in the May 1935 GP de Picardie. As a result, I wonder then which race did she wear #28?

#8 is from GP de Picardie 1937.
And #16 is from 1936.

EDIT: Sorry, just saw that Andrew posted this already.

Sorry, but these pits are undoubtly those at the Nürburgring. And as one can see 1 tank filler only thus NOT the T51A. Additionally, Zoltan Glass never took photos at Bern.
