COOMBS, John.

A well known member of the UK motor trade who has been involved in motor sport for several decades and is perhaps remembered as the entrant of 3.8 litre Mk. II Jaguars used in saloon car races in the late fiftties. His is the owner of a built-up “type 57S” special which carries the chassis no. 57367 with engine 272 and is fitted with type 59-style wheels, tuned engine with four Solex carburettors and a Maurice Gomm-built body . The car was completed in 1997 and carries the UK reg. no. 3 PU. On 7th June, 1997 it was presented at the Hurlingham Club Vuitton Classic event driven by Mrs. Coombs but failed to win any awards. It was pictured in Classic and Sports Car in August, 1997 (p.21). In 2000 it was listed in the British Bugatti Register (p.184) as a “57S/R?” (sic). It is stated that it has not been possible to authenticate the car’s claimed chassis number. The chassis was said to have come from a written-off type 57 found in Germany around 1987. Informmation posted on the internet in January 2010 stated that the original chassis and engine were sold to UK enthusiast Andrew Crisford and a new chassis frame and engine were ustilised.
