SHAKESPEARE, John W.

The Illinois (USA) dealer and Bugatti enthusiast who joined the UK BOC on 28th January 1954 when he owned a type 55. He subsequently built up a collection of over thirty Bugattis. In 1962 he had decided to sell it and was attempting to recover his outlay of 105,000 US dollars. The cars were eventually sold to Fritz Schlumpf after a great deal of unpleasant negotiating in which Hugh Conway was an unwilling participant. Schlumpf is said to have been waiting for his purchases to be delivered by train armed with a whip to keep curious spectators at bay.

The family money came from the Shakespeare Fishing tackle company. I wonder if he is still with us?

it seems that he was a man of rapid changing tastes and hobbies. after he collected
bugattis in a more "rush" way than schlumpf, he decided in wasting time and money into sports. he left his bugatti-collection in a large worehouse, dusting and detoriating away, many of them part dismanteled and unspecified parts lying around.
there had to be speciallists called to sort all the parts to the right car.....

some great articles on it in " automobile quarterly" and in " the lincoln in the barn" ( or so..) with b/w pics of the warehouse before collected on the railway- cars.
