The recent pictures of the early type 35 (4394) bring to mind a few little points.

Cholmondeley was previously named Lord Rocksavage and later became the Marquis of Cholmondeley with his wife being known as the Marquess.

On Wiki he is referred to as Georges. Should this be George which is the normal spelling in England ?

The Marquess appears in a picture of the car taken in Cannes looking quite petite and yet, she is said to have later had a special-bodied type 57 built to accomodate her great height.

Herewith a list of Bugattis owned by the Cholmondeleys :

Image

T35 : 4394 I'm fairly sure I have seen this car referred to as a T37 somewhere and on Wiki a mention is made of the fitment of a T37 radiator.

Image

T44 : 44879

Image

T49 : chassis number unknown. Are either of these saloons still around?

Image

T50 : chassis number unknown. I am fairly certain this car is no more.

Image

T57 : 57698. An Atalante with a fascinating history - please see Wiki.

Image

T57 : 57739 A saloon by Figoni & Falaschi, Reg FUW 180. You are right, the lady does not appear very amazon-like, nor does the car appear to have an unusually high roof either. Does anyone know the origin of this story?

Image

Are there any cars I've missed, and can anyone add anything else about these two quite fascinating people?

Regards
Johan

CHOLMONDELEY, Lady (Marquess of.).

The owner of an early Type 35 (4394 with the French registration 7997 M5) who resided at Villa Caldana, Cannes. The winner of La Turbie hill-climb on 15th March, 1925. She is reported to be a tall lady who found the type 57S too cramped for her liking. Her special Figoni-bodied type 57 is pictured in “Bugatti – La Pur-sang des automobiles”(4) p. 248. See also “Bugantics” 57/109 showing her at the wheel of the car outside her “family seat” in the spring of 1939. The car had perspex panels in the roof and its chassis number is listed as 57739. It carried the UK reistration FUW 180. The car is also pictured with her husband’s type 57C Atalante (57698).

CHOLMONDELEY, Lord. (Formerly known as Lord Rocksavage) (George or Georges).

The owner of several Bugattis starting with an 8 valve car (UK registation no. B 5166 - photo : Bugatti Magnum p.59 & “Bugantics” 31/1/36) and ending with a very elegant Atalanté-bodied type 57C. Some of his cars are featured in “Bugatti Magnum” including his type 44 (44879) fitted with a “cannée” four-seater coach body and a type 49 (UK reg. no. GP 847) fitted with a very similar body. He ordered a type 57SC in November, 1937. This was the last order placed for a type 57SC and was to be given chassis no. 57612). It was to be fitted with an Atlantic body and to be painted black but the order was cancelled and a type 57C (57698) was supplied instead (photo. taken outside “the family seat” see B57/66). He is said to have been a personal friend of Ettore. Obituary : “Bugantics” 31/4/9.

I found this photo (as mentioned by GCL-Wales) of the Cholmondeley 8-valve under unknown T13's (Wiki). Does anyone know the chassis number? Another question : Did they own any other Bugattis between this T13 and their T35? The gap of 11 or 12 years between delivery dates seem like a long time for 2 such arch-enthusiasts.

Thanks
Johan
