Post subject:  A Book on the T59?

I was looking at the photos of 57248 on Ultimatecarpage.com and I quote from the article written by Wouter Melissen : "Since then chassis 57248 has only had very few owners, who all respected its highly original condition. Beautifully preserved, it was driven up the hill at Goodwood in 2009 by Classic & Sports Car editor Mick Walsh. He is currently working on the definitive Bugatti Type 59 book."

Can anyone confirm this? I hope it's true, I always got the impression Hugh Conway much prefered the T35. Not that one can blame him, the T35 range was a winner, the T59 less so. Mind you the T59's lack of racing laurels has never stopped me from loving this car with a fervour bordering on the inappropriate!

Johan

the t59 is one of my favourites as well, it is a mean looking car. Why not ask Mick Walsh?

There's a 6 page article on the T59 in the August (2009) issue of Classic and Sportscar Magazine, I suppose by Mick Walsh. But indeed, why not ask him: mick.walsh@haymarket.com

The August edition of C&SC has not arrived in South Africa yet, but I did see the upcoming T59 article advertised in the July edition.

I took your advise Gentlemen and I send an e-mail to Mick Walsh asking for confirmation of the T59 book and if so to consider the e-mail a confirmed order from me.

I have not heard from him yet, but then again who in their right mind, myself excluded of course, answer e-mails on a Friday night?

Kind Regards
Johan

I've received a most courteous reply from Mick Walsh ; the T59 book is an ongoing project with a tentative publication date of early 2010.

There are now books dealing with the following Types : Brescia ; T32 ; T41 ; T43 ; T46 & T57S. Barrie Price dealt with Types 40 ; 44 ; 49 ; 46 ; 50 and 57 of course, but they are of little use (to me). There are now works in the pipeline on T51, T55 & T59. Conway's passion for the T35/51 is clear in G.P. Bugatti.

The authors of the T46 book has certainly set the standard for Types produced in relatively high numbers, so now I am hoping that the T40, T44, T49 & T57 will soon attract the attention of a great historian/author.

I believe Pierre-Yves Laugier is planning a work on the T50 as well, but seeing that his work on the T51 is yet to be published, as is the T55 work, I may very well be dead before his T50 sees the light of day! Maybe I should quit smoking?

Cheers
Johan

Uwe if I could I would, but I am afraid cigarettes is the one addiction I cannot beat. Pitiful really. Patches? Trust me Lazarus, I'm a lot weaker than that!

Still, if I'm lucky I will be the first man in my family to die from lung-cancer rather than the series of strokes that killed my great-grandfather, my grand-father and is busy killing my father. So the choice for me is between dying fighting for every last breath or dying bed-ridden, paralyzed and incontinent. Luckily I have a really good medical-aid.

Marvellous, I've just managed to really depress myself. Think I'll get into bed tonight with Norbert Steinhauser, Uwe Hucke, Hugh Conway and perhaps a little Sandy Leith for desert. I'm talking about their books you bunch of perverts!

Honestly, some people.

Regards
Johan
