Info from the site The Bugatti100p Project en Thanks for the info.

The Bugatti100p Project

Did you know…

The Bugatti 100P never flew.

• There are no official documents or contemporary news reports of the plane having flown (the plane’s existence was not a secret)

• The only written reference to the plane having flown identified Maurice Arnoux as the pilot. That would have been unlikely as there is no indication the 100P was ready to fly by early 1940, a time during which Commandant Arnoux was training for combat. He was shot down and killed on 06 June 1940 near Angivillers during the Battle of France.
• A design flaw made starting the front engine impossible. The rear engine – which drove the front propeller – was equipped with an adapter for an external electric starter. The front engine – which drove the rear propeller – had no such feature. Instead, prop blast from the front propeller was supposed to spin the rear propeller fast enough to start the front engine. That didn’t work while testing in mock-up form, which prompted a letter from Molsheim to Paris, as excerpted in the attached photo (Note 1):

Translation:

In the original project only the [rear] engine included a starter (external electric starter). This engine was connected to the front propeller and would use the action of the slipstream against the rear propeller to start the [front] engine.

This action has proved insufficient making it necessary to provide the [front] engine with its own starter (Note 2).

• Jean Francois Sibille, who as a young man worked at the shop on Rue de Débarcadère, told us that once the engines were installed in the plane they were never started and the plane never flew

Notes:

1 From an undated letter Note concernant les Héliceson file at Cité de l'Automobile in Molsheim.

2 Thanks to Sandy Skinner for help with the French-to-English translation. Gauche and droite were used here in an odd way to identify the engine by the position of its exhaust manifold. The front engine exhausted to the right side of the plane; the rear engine exhausted to the left.
